How you place the mic has a big impact usually up for multi channel or lively rooms, towards speakers with more damped ones. The less dirac has to do the better it will sound. Try correcting up to give or take 300hz(schroeder) depending on dips, can go a bit higher or lower.
Thinking of getting a real USB mic to use in place of the puck supplied with the Onkyo, lots of reading/watching to do in order to learn how the app (using MacOS) should be used for adjusting frequencies.
Umik-1 is great, comes with calibration files for 0 and 90 degrees. You’re right there is a learning curve, the mic and a proper stand helps a ton though.
I have had good success with the Storm Audio microphone placement suggestions. Also remember to apply some house curve to test what works best in your room. NAD has one, Storm too.
