Cryptic icons lead to ad-like pages. Constant delays to update. Apparently endless boring chats once you fo gain entry. What's the appeal? What's the payoff if I put in the time to make sense of it?

From my limited experience, Discord is a chatbox but with higher degrees of customization. Its good for short casual communication like text messaging.

It's not the thing itself, but the people you want to talk to using it. So if there aren't people you want to talk to there, it won't be much use.

Its the thing itself as well. Discord’s biggest weakness is lack of permanence. Longer discussions get buried in the pile and forgotten or lost. Discord is difficult for keeping record but great for quick communications.

@Philimon Yeah! I think of it as giving me a pile of chats to wade through. And with little sense of what's active or interesting. And somehow they generally feel cliquey so I'm reluctant to participate. Not sure why these impressions are so different to, say, a message board like SBAF or the old school IRC/BBS.

SBAF is not your typical message board either though. SBAF discourages noise (at least in main sub-forums) and is anti-censorship.
