@Northwest The pi2aes? I'd almost argue that it's even better with something like a Modi MB due to a cheaper USB implementation than the higher end DACs.
@Michael Kelly : I did notice that simultaneously testing Pi USB output and the AES Hat SPDIF output proved hard due to volume matching (USB is louder). Not a problem, but curious as to why. (Or if it could be tamed without losing bits)
Most likely due to the DAC. I am not sure how USB output handles the volume, but I do know that AES is bit for bit what comes out of the Pi I2S port. Perhaps MPD (the underlying audio handler in Linux) does some changes. You should ask this on the PI2AES thread.
