    Yeah it's probably good.

Are the earpads different than the ones in the 900?

Have you looked at the pictures? :p Yes, they are, and a lot of people are suggesting a great deal of the sound signature is due to the shape of the pads.

What else has this type of tuning (aside from other Fostex TH models and their Denon predecessors)?

interesting pads. of course it'll take two seconds for someone to create a standard pad for the THx00.

And lmao at moedawg140's review. That's the kind of raving, fawning "omg this is the best thing ever" review head-fi loves.

    Good boy moedawg, good boy.

They've got the nice pad interchangable twist on design to swap em out too, so people will prolly talk about how they sound with different pads as well.

X00 has sort of a slightly downward sloping W curve...

    1. ATH-W3000ANV, but more screwy in the mids.
    2. An intermediate tuning of Mr.Speakers MadDogs I heard at The Village meet a few years ago. (This was my favorite MadDog tuning).
    3. The Denons or TH-600/900didn't really have this sound. They were more U shaped.
No. Otherwise I would have burned the X00 and sent it back to Will and told him the X00 was a piece of shit. There are small treble spikes, but IMO they are needed to balance the slightly boosted bass. The Denon's have nasty ringing at 8.5kHz, and the overall treble from 7 to 12kHz is hotter than the mids.

W3000ANV has screwy mids. And the W3000 is inferior in almost every way, especially in terms of clarity and resolution.

The pads on the TH-X00 look like the stock pads from the TH-500RP:

They have a similar off-center asymmetrical ear cutout. I owned these briefly and found them very comfortable.

How is the sound vs the PM3? The PM3 has a very small amount of W shape as well: small null in the lower mids, slightly boosted around 3k, and a big null around 6-8k. If there was a spider web plot of the PM3 vs THX00, how would that look like?

3kHz is upper-mids. What makes X00 tasteful is the very broad midrange bump centered around 1.5kHz. The slight depression at 500Hz can tend to reduce nasal sound. 3kHz can add shrillness, but the X00 has a dip in this area instead of a peak like on PM3. The PM3 also seems bass syrup galore. Just this glob of bass. X00 bass it rumble, heft, foundational, like in a movie theater. I understand why Oppo tuned it this way, but some of the betas had better FR.

Think of X00 as a straight line 10db downward from 30Hz to 10kHz with strategically placed dips in the nasal and shrill sounding areas, salted with some minor peaks in the mid-treble to avoid the rolled-off to shit sound.

Ordered these near the end of the drop and I am really looking forward to find a decent amp to pair these with. Currently I have everything geared toward my HD650's, and while I do not expect drastically different sound, I will be able to listen more often as my wife wont have to listen to everything I am listening to as I move to closed back headphone.

What is the general consensus on low impedance cans with this type of freq response. What did people like as pairing with the TH900 & 600's? Again, probably leaning toward good value mid-fi pairings. Of course a ragnarok will make these purr, but what about something in the Liquid Carbon range of amps? I am expecting my Crack w/ SB to be too gooey, while my Lyr2 with the right tubes has a better shot.

L carbon should be fantastic. Lyr2 with leaner tubes too. Crack might be pushing it with 120ohms Zout.

After my last post it occurred to me that this might be the perfect excuse to try Schiit's solid state "tubes".

I like their SS tubes with HD650 for tighter bass. It might be a similar situation with TH-X00, for all other headphones so far I prefer tubes. Just my 2 cents.

My gut tells me Lyr + LISST with TH-X00. Really just a matter of preference and yours could be different from mine. I tend to go with control and articulation on bassy or dark headphones.

Except for those cups. Definitely prettier than the Mahogany (even as nice as they are).

500hz area might lead to some nasal characteristics, but it also helps fullness. 1.5-2k area can get tinny sounding real fast. Usually I'm not a fan of any type of depression in the lower midrange, and favor a slightly laid back upper midrange (ala HD800 and Hifiman). Hopefully I'll like the THX00's midrange. The production PM3's midrange is just tolerable for me, I feel as if there needs to be more lower bass and lower treble to balance it out. Like you I think some of the betas had a better FR. I was a big fan of the 1st beta-- actually I wish I would have kept it when Oppo gave me the option. Hearing the bass comparison is exciting. Can't wait to hear what kind of low-end the THX00 can dish out.
