I just took an Onyx brand stainless steel straw, 6mm diameter, and cut a 14mm section out of it, smoothed out the sides. Then cut out a circular ring of acoustic foam (it's hard foam), the same depth of 14mm and diameter of 14mm, then stuffed the straw through it at the centre, took out the excess, and now the foam is in a o-ring shape. Placed the straw in the foam, and will use this as the acoustic absorber resonator to place at the centre of my HD800 driver. Wish I had my measurement system running.

    14mm ~ approximately 1/4 wavelength at 6 khz.

I'll send marv my HD800 if it will continue the cause. We're going to figure out what mix of this plus a lite version of the BTAmod will be the perfect mix. Bonus points if we publish before the HD800s ships.

Senn wasn't the one stupid enough to leak the inside shots of the headphone before launch. I'd he pissed if I was them.

Seriously, Jude probably made Sennheiser lose like several hundred early purchases by posting the inner cup photos. Thankfully, given Marv's findings so far, Sennheiser really did think long and hard about this :)

We will really have to wait until someone gets a pair so that it can be measured and compared. Who knows, they may have some other secret tuning in there for the new HD800S

Interesting to see eventually how this with existing mods will complement/destroy each other. Just wondering, is there any use to tuning the resonator to 4khz? Or is if thats the direction its being tuned to since the nulling is happening in that region.

Oh, I think Sennheiser should be giddy about Marv's experimentation. Just brings more interest to the product.

Most normal people in the world will want an off-the-shelf product.

We're the only ones crazy enough to be exacting on how we want things to sound. Many of us are also cheap and would rather tweak an existing headphone instead of buying a new headphone with incremental upgrades. As Ravi has already implied, we will not be abandoning our original approach of lining the inside of the enclosure, but rather augmenting it with some ideas inspired by Sennheiser's latest approach.

I've experimented with some ideas posted at Bill-P's mod thread. My preliminary perception is that the chamber damp/lining mods make the sound somewhat warmer and more intimate but not enough to eliminate the 6K Hz anomaly. So the best solution probably is the combination of the chamber mods and the use of resonator, depending on one's taste. Surprisingly, last night I found the HD800 with chamber damping sounded almost to the point I like the trebles to be when driven by a Rotel 1603 receiver as compared to MAC 4100. Collectively, integrated mods and choice of amp may produce very good results.

Mmmh..so much sense of community self-importance here :p
SBAF crazy modders are a niche within a niche. It's fun, hell yeah, but the impact on Sennheiser's sales is completely insignificant. As Tyll said, it might as well be the icing on the cake for Senn's advertising |\/|

With the quickly plummeting price of the HD800s, it might not be a bad idea to just grab one in case the tuning is reproducible.

That black does look hella good though.

    Bravo!
glad to be a crazy one within a niche instead of dropping mega$ on a slightly altered, re-painted HD800.

besides, most sane HD800 owners already own a quality balanced cable- why pay for Senn's stock cable? ick.

It's not that we think the problem is that SBAF is some big crazy place that will negatively impact senn sales. It's that when you have a pre-release product, you generally don't want people removing parts (even if it's just the dust shield) and posting pics of the insides online.

It sure looked like Axel's hand in the pics of the HD800S with the dust-cover off though.

    Then they shouldn't "pre-release" it.

Having the Sennheiser tweaks in there might significantly change the need for previously developed damping mods.

I 100% agree. I don't think Sennheiser has anything to hide before product launch. They accomplished what they wanted to with their revision and there is no reason to hide it.

Do we know if the dust covers are the same between both models?
