One of friends of one of my firends owns a monster Krell amp just like ohG's. He borrowed a K1000 and listened to both cans. He prefers the K1000. He told us this AKG is slightly (about 30%) better than he6 (but his he6 is unmodded).

Hello all. First post here, so take it easy on me...

I ordered a pair of HE-6's, yesterday, and I am now looking for an amp to power them, as I suspect that my current amps would not fare well with the HE-6's. I'm leaning toward the Audio-gd amps, at the moment, and in particular, the Precision 1 and the NFB-1AMP.

Initially, I was leaning toward the NFB-1AMP, which is attractive as a fully-balanced headphone amp, and I figured that it might be more versatile (for use with my other headphones). Then again, that versatility may not be a reality, as I 'd likely get the +9dB (for +25dB total) gain option (which is recommended for the HE-6's), and that would probably hinder its ability to work with my other cans (with the possible exception of my HE-560's).

I think that I am now leaning toward the Precision 1, as my intuition tells me that the Precision 1 would be the better match for the HE-6's. The Precision 1 may also end up being the more versatile amp, as it can be used to drive speakers, but my primary goal is to drive the HE-6's well.

Does anyone have experience with one or both of these amps with the HE-6's?

Any input is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

First post! Get him! He's a witch!

I don't think anyone has heard the Precision 1 with the HE-6, at least as far as I've ready. The precision 1 didn't really "click" with the headphone community. Although, to me it seemed like a great box to have. I'd stray away from the NFB-1 amplifier. I didn't think the NFB-10SE Amplifier had enough juice for the He-6.

Of course, if you end up with the Precision 1 and don't like it, you can always sell it to me ;). I'm interested in one, but not curious enough to drop full price and commit.

Never heard the Precision 1 but my bet is on that one.

Yeah the Precision 1 is a beast. I thought about getting one for my living room stereo setup.

Thanks for the feedback. My suspicion is that the NFB-1AMP (based on the Master 9 design) is the more "refined" amp, but the Precision 1 is clearly more powerful. I'd prefer to choose the more "refined" amp, but only if it can deliver the requisite power, which is where my concern lies. Several on Head-Fi have stated that the NFB-1AMP pairs well with the HE-6, which is making me second-guess getting the Precision 1, though that's still where I am leaning at the moment.

Have you tried running the HE-6 off the Studio speaker taps yet? I wonder how that compares.

I did, it was a worse match than the balanced headphone jack

A lot of this stuff depends on personal preferences. Some observations over time.
    1. @Clemmaster prefers a warmer sound. Both his HE-6 mod and his amps reflect this. He will find something like the HD800 unlistenable on most rigs.
    2. @ohhgourami prefers a less bassy less warm sound with smooth and detailed treble. As with @Clemmaster, Jason's mods and amps reflect this.
    3. @drfindley has been "corrupted" by @shaizada's EAR gear, and now prefers a warmer lusher sound. Only time will tell if he sticks to this.

I'd say I'm trying to find the midpoint between lush and thin. Too lush is a bit too Biff Tannen for me, but too thin is feels a bit more like an outline.

Was the gain the same on both?

If the Ember II at around 2.4w out can drive the HE 6, can I expect my Audio GD NFB10ES2 at like 5.8w into 50 ohms to give me a better quality of sound than my HE 4 Currently?
