This is by far the best tone I've heard on any headphone..sadly every time I listen to this beautiful tone I just can't help but think when are these going to fail as I know I'll never find a headphone with the musical, lush smooth sound and it f'ing sucks. It's all worth it just to experience perfection but I'm praying for at least 4 years so I don't have to go on a stupid long search for the next headphone that mimics it.

Anyone else still have there 2.1's?

Even if you find another 2.1 don't be so sure it sounds the same. At that point Audezes were very inconsistent to say the least.

Mod an HD650 and solder an Elekit TU8200DX. Problem solved.

Have you heard of many 2.1's failing in the recent years? There's lots of them around and most have worked just fine. Obviously owners of the failed pairs are most vocal about the issue. I'm going to just enjoy my pair and not worry about it.

But you're right, it would be difficult to find a pair with similar lovely sound.

I still have mine. Oldest piece of headphone audio I still own. I figure if it has worked this long, I am not going to worry about it. I do use beeswax sealant on it every now and then to keep the wood from cracking. I do love it, but don't use it that often…hd650 ergonomics are just better and it is a tossup between which sound signature I prefer.

This pair was made in May 2011 so that's reassuring as most seemed to have failed within 6 months. The 650 are fantastic, have not heard a modded one but the LCD-2.1 has the qualities of the HD650 with better sub bass and impact. The 2.1 and early is the only LCD-2 that I've heard that does bass impact well, my 2016 drivers LCD-2 had weak bass but good extension in comparison.

It's going to be hard to find a successor; I was looking at the Oppo PM-1 but when I demoed them I wasn't that impressed with them but all I had was a Fiio player. My Nighthawk has some LCD-2 qualities but doesn't have the emotion and mid presence of the 2.1 but better than the 2016's in this area.

The humidity is always quite high here in London so no worries about wood cracking but I'm always putting bee's wax on mine.

I think that you worry a little too much. Just enjoy what you like. If you have any issues, it wouldn't be the end of the world to send it in for repair. It's not uncommon for Audeze to do the repair at no cost even when the hp was out of warranty just to get a happy customer.

@Ice-man I thought Audeze will "upgrade" it to the newer Fazor version when you send it in for repair. Sort of like we will never have an uber 48h LCD3 again.

The original LCD-2 was my first Audeze and still my favorite. Is that the "2.1?" It has that very distinctive Audeze house sound with the shelved highs and thick mids. A really pleasant sound that weirded me out when I first listened to them, but I grew to love them. Also went through a lot of trouble repairing the cracked gimbles and them sending me the wrong kind of screws and having to wait half a year for them to send the right ones. Oh, Audeze.

I think Audeze lost that magic with the LCD-3 and everything after that.

The LCD 2.2 was my first (and remains my fave Audez'e as well)...IME, wasted a lot of money on the 3, X and XC (especially this one, ugh!).... Like the Sine though although this is not typical Audez'e..

Add; Just thinking, money on the 3+X+XC > cost of Utopia...shucks, Focal where the hell were you in 2012/13?

I really liked the tone of the pre fazor LCD-3 I know many have had veil issues though. I tried a 2015 fazor LCD-3 about 4 months ago and found it to have a certain lushness but the weird treble popped up form time to time and the bass impact and extension wasn't great. The X sounded horrible to me just a weird mess.

Yeah they replace with the newer drivers instead of repair :(
The first one was the one with the left and right printed on the sides with no stopper on the cups so they just span around. They were the darkest of the bunch then they got rid of the left and right print. The next was a driver change which is the one I have, it's still a dark headphone but with a slightly higher treble and and I believe it's the same driver as the 2.2 but without the leather headband.

    There's a original LCD-2 on ebay I'm so tempted!

I agree. The lcd4 is decidedly unmagical

My pair of 2.1's was made in 10/2010. It's made it this far (and without cracking too in the notorious Finnish winters).

Actually I don't find these all that low in treble, especially with SS-amping. It's smooth and non-fatiguing but natural sounding. It's slightly brighter than my HD600 in relation to the mids at least.

Are you using the leather or velour earpads?
I had the LCD-2.1, but only with the velour pads. I never quite heard sub-bass on the LCD2 with them. In fact doing A/B tests with the HD800, they were about the same.

Leather, I'm considering the Velour pads as leather gets too hot. Maybe an issue with your drivers? the 2.1 has sub bass that extends all the way; it's among the best I've heard,

    Other contenders for me are

    TH900
    Nighthawk
    D7000

I'd rank the 2.1 very competitive in sub bass presence.

I had the TH900 with my when I had the LCD-2.1 & the TH900 had what I had perceived insane sub-bass, something all my other headphones lacked. Maybe it was the Velour reduced the rumble?

I think if your LCD2 is still kicking, it probably will keep kicking. One thing to always be gentle about is placing the headphones on your head. The drivers flex when there is a change in pressure, and if you plop them on your head quickly putting the drivers under tension, it may harm them over time.

I'm jealous! I would really like to hear a 2.1 or 2.2 prefazor

Ah! Cheers for the tip. I tend to really baby these as much as possible. I'd be happy to even get another year out of them.

They are wonderful sounding it's the only headphone I prefer flat out over my 650 in tone. It's the only headphone that's made me think this is how music should sound! Makes me go all mushy with the right track haha.

I was disappointed in the other Planars like the HEK,LCD-4 etc.
