If you're inputting via SPDIF/etc then the firmware version doesn't matter. It only matters for USB.

Time to get back in the game. This has been on my shortlist for my 2-channel system and I would love to post my thoughts on it, if there's room.

linux - RoPieee via COAX usually, but will try the USB, too

Well, I just snagged a used Holo May KTE so I'll drop off this list.

Hurr durr - I thought SBAF was doing a May loaner instead of a Spring 3 loaner.

Interested anyways. Socal. Windows for USB from a desktop, will use pi2aes for other outputs.

Will also compare to a Spring 2 that I currently have and if my memory is still clear enough, the few (different) Holo May DACs that I've heard.

If there’s room, I’d love to join. I only use the Pi2aes, not USB, and live in CT.

there is no issue for most people, but not everyone uses a preamp or headphone amp. Some people actually like to use digital volume control in the OS.

I just want everyone to be aware of the variable volume control firmware.
I had one customer who sold his dac because he could not use variable volume in his windows OS.... but sadly it's just a quick fix to change the firmware if you are this type of user who likes to control volume in the OS. Mac and Windows users sometimes do this.... but for Linux it must be fixed. Technically the dac can be shipped to everyone with fixed volume firmware as long as everyone is aware of this and is using preamp or headphone amp.

@bimmer100 is Tim from Holo Audio. I actually didn't understand this correctly from our conversation so the confusion is partly my fault, I'm sorry.

I'm going to assume that no one here changes volume with software on their computer, as we all use preamps or headphone amps here. So I'll have the Spring 3 KTE set to the "fixed volume" firmware nd then we can just have one list with no confusion.

Correct me if I'm wrong and there is a need for software volume control.

Another clarification, this is the Spring 3 KTE with no preamp module.

    Thanks

I ran into some challenges updating the firmware, fortunately Tim suggested a tweak and it worked. The DAC has been updated to the latest version of the fixed volume firmware and I'll be sending it off this week.

Thanks everyone for your patience, we wanted to be sure we had the correct version of the latest firmware handled before kicking this off.

Everyone should thank @loadexfa for spending time tinkering with the Spring 3 for all of us, he's already borrowed a MAY so this wasn't really for him, but for all of you.

An update, I finally tested the DAC today, a hectic work week delayed me until now. There are some issues unfortunately, I will reply to the support ticket with Tim and hopefully get them resolved soon. A quick summary in case anyone here knows anything useful to move this along:
    • Playing from USB on either Windows 10 or Macbook: No audio from the left channel. In Windows this was turned all the way down because that is part of the firmware update process but when I turned it back up, still nothing. Also that shouldn't impact playing from a Mac. The Holo driver for Windows allows me to change the channel volume and I turned it all the way up there too
    • Playing from AES from Ambre, only the right channel plays for like 5-10 seconds and then both kick in. The sound stage is really weird, sometimes instruments are pushed WAY back and sound like a blanket was thrown over them while others sound more normal
Sorry folks, the wait continues. I'm open to any suggestions. I'm glad I tested before shipping this off.

Some days I am helpful. Others an idiot. Today I was both. I had one interconnect going to the Pavane and the other to the Holo. That explains ... everything. This will ship out tomorrow. Unless I manage to do something else even more idiotic before then.

    Sorry for the false alarm.

@rhythmdevils Please take me off of this line too for the same reasons as the LiM loaner. Thanks!
