The consumer/professional divide in these doesn't mean anything. Professionals don't mix on headphones, headphones are used for tracking. If a studio has a open headphone lying around, most of the time it will be something like the HD 600/650 or DT 880 (or even an HD 598) they're cheap and relatively flat to just check how the panning in the mix sounds on audiophile headphones.

The HD 580, 600, 650, and 800 were and still are all marketed as "professional" or "reference" headphones. There's no reason why an audio engineer couldn't use the 800S for the same thing despite the boosted subbass (probably the cause of the distortion) to try to thicken up the lean sound resulting from the problematic housing.

All that means is they checked the mix with those, not that they "mixed" on them. You'd have to be stupid/a bedroom DJ to mix on headphones. It's a reference; the same as listening to a rough mix in a car.

I noticed the SBAF absorber there, not sure if it was touched on in the video as I'm still watching.

I'd be curious to hear your thoughts on it in the HD800S, @Tyll Hertsens. Is it too damped at that point or are there still improvements to your ears?

Very interesting write up by Tyll as always. As the 800S has cemented its place as the world finest headphones once more it would be great if Innerfidelty could do an article on the ' Best amp for the HD800S'. At $1699 they are affordable if you think in terms of how much stuff in the 'world finest' category usually costs.

I'm one such happy HD800S owner in search of a worthy amp. :D

    Thanks for your work Tyll!

    Did you read this? http://www.innerfidelity.com/content/big-sound-2015-wrap-my-take-headphone-amps#2zoV3401ULx4smS1.97

Also look at eddie current or donald north audio, they have nice stuff.

Traditionally HD800 owners have often recommended tubes to go with it, but now that the HD800S is slightly more forgiving my gut feeling tells me that solid state will work fine too. If so maybe the auralic taurus.

But the black widow from eddie current seems nice. Lots of options...

Tyll, great article. Have you done any measurements with SD resonator + SBAF absorber or even just SBAF absorber alone? Very interested in how both compare to the measurements you took for the article.

I can confirm your gut feeling regarding solid state amps, I think the 800S sounds much better with my Ragnarok than the stock 800 did. It's not as resolving as a higher end EC/DNA amp, but it gets the job done.

I have the SBAF absorber plus some "partial Bill-Mods" in mine. Bill would have to chime in and share what he left in my 800. I have really enjoyed the balance.

I hate to be without them but may send them in to serve science...

Hi guys. Just got the headphones boxed up and pin the way back home. Yooge thanks to Dr. Higgs and TMoney for letting me your cans!!!

A promised, I've put together a booklet of graphs from the all the measurements I took. I'd rather the link not be shared elsewhere, thanks.

The DOT mod uses these three ring binder reinforcing dots, Staples Item# 636156 Portable Reinforcements

Mine doesn't have the French on it. :(

It's weird, I can't find them on US Staples sites.

They fit perfectly in the middle hole. I put one at the bottom of the well, and one on the outside of the screen in front of it.
The measurements look pretty good, but I already removed the mod...it's not so easy. :(
It may also work if you cover the bottom one with tape to seal it off.

I'll probably give it another go at a more relaxed pace. I just couldn't deal with this mod as I was writing the article.
But feel free to try it, guys, I think it might be worth a try.

Just don't have to want to explain it every where or have people misrepresent stuff.

Thanks! The measurement you have was with your version of "Anax mod" (so, sorta-kinda-not-really Anax mod), yes? The ring with felt around driver? That and combined the the dot mod. Looks pretty simple to implement, and results are impressive.

    Thanks for posting this.

I heard a modded pair of HD800s with both the SD and SBAF mods a few weeks ago and thought the two of them together took a bit too much away in terms of technicalities. Glad to see the measurements bear that out.

The headphones I had didn't have the SD mod, but some tips that were an early attempt at the SD mod.
