Josephine Foster - Hazel Eyes I Will Lead You

This is some of the most challenging folk music I have ever heard. It’s hauntingly beautiful. But she sings in a way that is unnerving and harsh, though her voice is absolutely incredible for being able to carry these tunes and for the range she possesses and the tones she creates with her voice.

Her voice is accompanied by acoustic instruments mostly. This music is really something to behold, making folk music this challenging and with such depth is an incredible feat.

Fans of Joanna Newsom should check this out.

She also has a recent album which must be heard in contrast with this one

    Josephine Foster - Godmother

It’s like she took the musical style above and filtered it through ambient soundscapes. lt takes the edge off her music and turns it into something entirely different.

It’s just her voice, an acoustic guitar and haunting electronic sounds fading in and out.

I can listen to this in the background very easily, I can’t listen to the above album in the background, it requires some effort and patience or just the right mood.

The depth is still there, but she has made her songs more accessible by stripping them bare and adding these atmospherics. it’s like she heard Nick Cave’s Ghosteen and was inspired to make something with that sound. (though I don't think that's the case due the release date alone)

Both of these are incredible albums worth hearing, very different interpretations of the same vision and great to see an artist exploring sound like this.
