There's a lot of talk on headfi about Venture Electronics (VE) buds. I picked up a pair of their cheap Monk and liked it for under $10. They have some much more expensive offerings. Its actually way better build quality than I thought.

I've got a pair of these on order now. They've been shipped which means I'll probably see them next week. Everyone on HF is splooging over them, which doesn't mean much, but for $5 it's not much of a risk to try them out.

How about a semi open over ear like DT880?

even larger than my OPPO PM-3... :) I'm trying to physically down-size my portables, heh.

I'll have a look at the VE! the Zen (high end one) looks to measure really poorly though, gigantic dip in the midrange - and I'm a big midrange head.
will keep looking to see if I can find anything of the mid-priced one too, and then even the cheapest one.

    Thank you!

I went ahead and purchased the Bifrost Multibit as an upgrade to Modi. Is there a solid state amp with a warmish sound that would be a definite upgrade from Asgard 2?

I am using mainly HE-560 and HD600 and prefer not to get a tube amp or hybrid. Budget is around $1,500 for the new amp.

The Black Widow would probably fill that spot. I have a Krell Klone that I like the HE-560 on, but I prefer tubes with the HD600.

My only resistance to tube amps is that I know I'd go crazy trying different tubes.

I'm stuck on the fence between Gungnir Multibit and Yggdrasil and am looking for advice. I'm using dual cma800r in dual mono configuration. I have hd650, 800 S, and Ether. I listen to jazz, folk, pop, edm etc. Lot's of vocal centered music. Less classical and rock.

Can Yggdrasil match of the warmth and sub bass slam of Gungnir Multibit? Or maybe it's better. Price doesn't figure into the equation. Any help is appreciated.

Yggdrasil is less warm as a result of sounding more focused, but with better dynamics and more sub bass power.

You don't have to. You can get a baseline, and then ask people here if you have somewhere you would like to go. Excessive tube rolling is generally frowned upon here. Personally, I hate tube rolling, even though I love tube amps.

Yggdrasil is amazing. If everything else was equal and I had the $$$ I'd take it 10/10 times over the Gungnir Multibit.

I think that is the biggest benefit of this forum and even this post. We can't know what we haven't tried and not everyone has access or budget to try out a lot of equipment, so recommendations, good reviews and detailed descriptions / measurements of what has been tried gets us where we need to be. Tube rolling is fairly frustrating when you don't know what you are doing ( I own 6 sets of tubes for my Lyr 2, and none are a perfect fit). I should have saved the money and bought the nicest set possible based on a tried and true combo.

If I were to get a Lyr 2 to go with my Bifrost Multibit and HE-560, would the stock Lyr 2 6BZ7 tubes add a bit of warmth compared to the sound I am getting from Asgard 2?

Not the stock tubes. Get Amperex Orangle globes if you want warmth.

The Lyr 2 with stock 6BZ7 tubes is a little warmer than the Asgard 2. With the stock tubes, in terms of warmth, Lyr 2 > Asgard 2 => Valhalla 2. You can also expect the Lyr 2 to have more dynamic punch over the Asgard 2, regardless of tubes. Also, any vintage tube will be better than the stock 6BZ7. The Amperex Orange globes run on the warmer side of the spectrum of the 6922/6DJ8 types.

So I picked up an HE-6 and some Audeze vegan pads. Changing the pads was a bit of a pain, but I managed it. Should I use the adhesive rings? I just stuck them on the plastic rings and somehow managed to get the plastic rings back onto the cups.

I also bought an HD 800 S from a guy on HF who says is new in box, he just opened it to take a pic. We'll see. When that gets here, I'll compare that, the HD 800 I already have, and the HE-6 out of my Ragnarok.

I'd like to get a Ragnarok comparable tube amp if I stick with the 800 / 800S. Any suggestions? I've had Valhalla 2 before, and that didn't really wow me that much. I had an Eddie Current Super 7 (sold to Greed) that I really liked a few years ago. Is there anything like that still in production? I'd love to jump on the EC train again, but I really don't know what's best.

If HE-6 wins, I might just stick with Ragnarok.

@cizx consider the mjolnir 2 with some NOS tubes. I haven't tried the he6 from it but the 800 and 800S sounds very nice with it.

Yeah, I know it won't be enough for HE-6... but maybe if I stick with one of the 800s.
Though I do want something that looks more like a retro-futuristic space shippy thing.
