@StandUp713 Nice shot at the track! I am hoping to get out to the track this summer for the first time. Although I really don't need another expensive hobby, and I have a feeling if I do go out for a track day I will leave with another one, I still need to go at least once.

The new Thruxton R looks wicked, definitely want to give one a try at some point. I have been a big fan of Triumph ever since I got my Street Triple R, it's a fantastic bike!

I read all the thread few months ago and I remember I thought you guys were real downers about motorcycles.

I've always wanted to ride since I was 11, my experience began with this moped (50CC) at 14:

Then I took my car license and you know how it is... when there's time there's no money and when there's money there's no time and I let my passion sleep in oblivion. I've ridden some friends nice bikes occasionally in my early twenties and was never afraid to rev it up on cbr600rr, r6, r1, etc.

Last week a friend decided to donate to me his bike as a wedding gift. It is a Yamaha TDM 900 '02 in good shape:

Well... after a few days spent riding around I realize how dumb I've been underestimating your precious advice (expecially @johnjen, @Marvey and @Tyll Hertsens). Bikes could be freaking dangerous and some kind of fighting attitude against cagers trying to screw you is required. Now I'm in my early thirties and I'm not anymore the cocky fearless idiot I was as a boy. I now feel some kind of reverential fear and respect when I get on the bike.

    TL,DR:
Thank you guys for the great piece of advice given in this thread, very useful and informative for beginners. This thread should be included in bikes user manual! :)

As my main man Dirty Hairy sez
"A Man's gotta know his limitations."

This is especially true for riding these days.

And recognizing this sooner rather than later means you're less likely to become a statistic vs. gain enough experience to feed the need to be able to ride well.

And really, there is no known cure once the hook fully sets…

Well other than scaring yourself enough to not just swear off riding, but swear at it as well.

Just wondering if any one else rode to Port Dover, ON for Friday the 13th. It was pretty crazy, highly recommend checking it out at least once.

Yeah sold my cbr1000rr a few years ago because I was going to wind up killing myself or someone else. I think I'm a few years wiser and want to get back on another litre bike, the s1000rr/hp4 and r1/m are looking good!

OJ you should look at a second hand ninja 250 or cbr250, the bikes are always in demand because they are great for leaners, they are efficient, fast enough to be fun but not fast enough to be Super Deadly. They hold their value brilliantly.

I'm glad to see all the recommendations for taking a safety course. I took a 20 hr weekend course because in my state when you have your certificate you can just walk into the DMV and get your license. Later I had friends who had ridden for years comment on how the course was so valuable and they learned something even as experienced riders.

I have a Honda Helix, which is a 250cc maxi-scooter. I use it to commute to work about 4 mos out of the year. Even though it goes fast enough I have yet to go out on the interstate with it. It's hard to react quickly and safely when you're doing 65 mph. So I just keep it to city riding mostly 45mph or under.

My fiancé completed her MSF basic class ...

Before she went into that she was dead set on a 300cc Vespa, and a rather Italian get up to wear while riding it. Short leather mini-skirt, boots with epic heels, open-face helmet, tiny fashion-leather jacket. She came back from it wanting a full-face helmet, full-leather (albeit some rather hot stuff), far more sensible footwear, and a very different viewpoint on riding in actual traffic than she had before.

And then, 14 days in Italy later, I think she was leaning more towards the full-blown armored gear that I tend to favor when I ride on the street! Those buggers are insane ... especially on the one-way road through Positano ...

I'm reminded of an article in one of the motorcycle mags a ways back, where the author mentioned that when he looks down at the pavement whizzing by underneath the bike, it reminded him of a belt sander, with a 02 grit belt zipping by at 60mph.

Flesh tends to yield to such abrasion.

I see so many lads charging around in flip flops, board shorts and a singlet in summer. Sure leather is hot as hell, but these guys have never come off. I've hit the deck at 60kms/hr and turned kevlar gloves into tissue paper in an instant. I don't want to think that would happen at decent speed with no gear on.

I shake my head every time I see these guys in their early 20's ripping down the Interstate at 70mph, no helmet, no shirt. Worse yet, sometimes with a girl on the back wearing barely more than a bikini.

Although I admit that sometimes I take the bike just up the street to the store wearing sandals, shorts and a t-shirt. I'm usually under 35mph, but I know better and should rethink that. I've crashed on a bicycle at 30, and know how that can turn a guy into hamburger.

I'll be taking the moto safety course starting this friday, and I'll be eager to get into the biking world after that. Looking at the Honda CB300f and KTM RC390 for my first bikes, will test drive the both of them and do more research on the KTM before I do any buying though.
Still unsure if I should just go for one of the Triumph sports bikes since that's my end goal at this time

Might I also recommend the Ninja 300 ABS? Very nice bike. Two cylinder instead of one and ABS is a true life saver.
