It looks like you and I and others have ended up with loads of problems because of the latest release of Volumio. The straightforward advice is this:

Do not use or upgrade to Volumio version 2.882 if you want to use add ins or console commands. Use version 2.873 or earlier.

Hopefully the next release of Volumio will fix these problems.

I'm finding SBAF's 'forum' conversational structure doesn't work for sharing tips.

For example, there's a lot of need to go back and edit posts to clarify or incorporate new information, especially when facing a messy situation like this recent disaster of a Volumio update. Suggestions welcome.

I plan to change to publishing one tip per thread, so the responses will be on the same topic, and I can go back and edit the initial post accordingly.

It would be good if moderators can create a new category on "FOSS Digital" to hold these tip threads on free and open-source (Volumio, Moode etc) players.

Tried this out. Still has some issue with borked gcc packages. Maybe I'll mess with it again some other time - would rather just listen to music.

I'm guessing you were messed around by the Volumio 2.882 update, mentioned above. It has wasted a lot of time for several of us. Such updates are a reason not to tweak for the last little bit of performance, and install the latest updates as soona s they come out.

Hi. I have a question. Is it possible to setup a NAS drive connected to raspPI running Volumio, that is visible on my PC and I'm able to use it as a normal NAS drive?

+1 to this question. I think it is possible, I just haven't messed with it enough. I ended up going with the Logitech Media Server / Squeezelite / Pi version for basically what you are asking. You can set up LMS on the NAS and it will be found on the Pi.

    Hope that makes sense

If you open Settings and go to Sources, there should be an 'Add New Drive' button which will allow you to add your NAS.

(Where that tab is varies on different versions - in mine (2.657) it's under 'My Music'; in the version currently illustrated in the help documentation it's under 'Sources': https://volumio.github.io/docs/User_Manual/First_steps_with_Volumio.html , scroll down to '2 - Settings').

Edit: Ah - some subtleties in your question I missed, I think. To repeat @M3NTAL , I think so - but I can't give you specifics with Volumio beyond that.

I'm not sure - why not add a switch or a router with more ports?

Under Volumio > Settings > Sources > Network Drives > Add New Drive > Show Advanced Options, I used "NAS" for the alias and entered 192.168.1.xx (where xx is the specific IP address of your NAS). Path is your music subdirectory. For Widows 10 and my Synology NAS, I use the CIFS file share type. I enter my user name and password for my Synology NAS. Press "Save" and, if done correctly, Volumio should start scanning and creating an index of your NAS music files. On my system, it takes about 30 minutes to complete the index of 800 GB of music files. Watch the spinner next to "Music Library" in the Volumio menu system to know when it is actively indexing.

Thank You. But I want to create a NAS in volumio with connected drive to rpi, not connect to a external NAS.

This is the settings i tried with no success. 192.168.1.8 is my volumio IP adres.

I don't think Volumio supports that functionality. That screen is for adding an existing network drive to Volumio.

Ok thanks. That's what I was asking in my first post. Sorry for not being clear enough.

You should be able to do it from the command line on the Volumio streamer, but outside the Volumio menus. Just google around setting up Debian linux as a NAS.

However, I wouldn't pursue this direction -- I've found its better to keep the functionality on different machines. If something goes wrong with Volumio, it's convenient to re-flash the sd-card and have it working again in a few minutes.

So speaking of this, is there a way to copy the current card with all the various custom settings in config etc. so all can be flashed to a new one? So one doesn't need to go through all that again.

The surefire way us to take an image of the SD card, and flash that when needed.. That's pretty easy to do on a PC, Mac etc. Just Google it.
