I've had my Jagger for 6+ years, and treat it with little/no respect. I don't doubt that it is pot metal under that chrome plate, but it has held up great so far.

Same here. I clean mine after every use, which takes a whole 20 seconds.

    Still looks brand new.

LOL! Regarding pot metal, when I was little I was playing with my grandfather's safety razor. I dropped it and it broke. My grandfather was fairly mad, probably because he paid good money for it. Then he looked closely. Yup, pot metal or some heavy cheap shit. He looked at me and then to the razor, and kind of said something on the order of "don't worry, I didn't know this was cheap shit anyway".

My cheapo razor is pot metal. Doesn't mean I don't get a good shave though.

Besides the Feather, Ikon razors are stainless. They feel and look very well-made. The workmanship really impressed me, even on the non-coated versions. The scalloping on their slants is a totally different league from the Merkurs. Above The Tie and Pils also make stainless razors, but I've never handled them in person. The Pils looks slippery. There's also the Rockwell 6S (but unfortunately not the Model T), if you're looking for something that's semi-adjustable. Then there's the Oneblade, which is $$$.

Same, my merkur got all corroded after 2-3 years and the threads on the handle wouldn't screw into the head anymore. Much happier with my Feather razor, though it was like 8 times as much money haha

I've had a Muhle R89 in rose gold for a few years, and the handle's tarnished down to a greenish colour. This is weird, because everyone seems to say that it doesn't tarnish.
Is there a way to fix this?

If you have access to a non abrasive, or at least very mildly abrasive polish (I personally recommend Simichrome), it can clear up real nice. However, since it's copper coating, it'll tarnish again eventually.

BTW, I bought a $17 safety razor from wall-mart. Yeah, yeah, it's not as awesome as other ones, but I'll give it a try. I have only tried straight razors and cartridge.

Yeah I bought the ASD2 too and then it turned out an 8 dollar razor gave me a better shave with the ASD2 performing equivalent to a smoother version of a Bic disposable; the Feather popular is actually more aggressive but less efficient. I have thick hairs. I need to sell mine. Expect it in the outlet for cheap after I clean it with vinegar and scrubbing bubbles.
The Van der Hagen /Pawnstsrs guys one? That's a rebranded Weishi razor from China. If it works and the gaps are even, then Weishi is a nice razor, equivalent to a milder version of European pot metal stuff. The Lord razors from Egypt (?) Are similar if you get a good one.

The Feather Popular and Wilkinson Classic are actually better made than almost all the pot metal tier ones and older US made double edged Gillettes (UK Gillettes had better QC). Modern Gillette cartridge handles also have worse QC than even 15 years ago when I started shaving. Also the Gillette disposables are way more inconsistent than Bics or the carts. I think they are binned blades for carts.

    Darn.
Thanks though, now I know I should just get a new DE that doesn't tarnish.

There is a positive to copper coating though. Copper is inherently antimicrobial, so at least your handle will always be free of germs, tarnished or not.

Feather ASD2. Marine grade stainless steel or some craziness + a chrome plating.

I like the look of those stainless razors! I had no idea that the style of head made a difference in the shave. I tried safety razors 3-4 years ago and got frustrated when I couldn't get the results I wanted. Perhaps now that the hair on the top of my head is migrating to my face and filling in my beard I should give it another go.

Any suggestion between the Ikon and the Rockwell 6S? I like that they are both somewhat customizable.

So I shaved today with the Hagen razor. I got a good shave. Asked the wife, and she said that while it was not bad, the Trac II did a better job.

I feel fine with the Hagen though. My only complaint is that the handle is too short. I'm used to a longer handle, and have better control of the blade that way.

I also had to do 3 passes with the safety razor, instead of the usual 2 with the Trac II.

I loved the blade mechanism, and the looks of the razor. I also loved the fact that I feel better using a metal blade than a cartridge.

There passes: with, across, then against the grain is normal. My problem is the good 2 Trac handles aren't made any more and the 3-5 bladed ones barely work. I got the 5 bladed schtick for free and it was some Jackson Pollack crap trying to get an even shave when I cut myself.

I've used 5 bladed (I think) razors. I didn't have any problems with them. But I did not feel they had a significant advantage over the Trac 2, and I felt a bit like they were a waste. The cartridges are also relatively expensive.

To me a good shave comes with technique and practice. I can get an uber shave with a Trac 2 with 3 passes. But it takes more time. I get a pretty good one with 2 passes. And I get horrid mediocrity with 1 pass (though the first pass is the one that takes the most hair by far).

That said, the safety razor is sort of a luxory if you have the time and you care about technique. I will likely get a better shave with a Trac 2, but using the safety razor feels nice. I can say using the straight razor feels awesome as well. And may get a good one some time. I had a pretty meh one before.

Will see. These things are like luxory items. A Trac 2 does the trick if you want to get the job done and not go down the crazy 100 blade cartridge hole which never made much sense to me.

EDIT: I also don't have many bumps in my skin. Just shit loads of hair.

BTW, if I wanted to upgrade the safety razor I would consider this (unless of course one has a much better razor all around that meets one's personal requirements):

    https://www.amazon.com/Classic-Handle-Butterfly-Double-Safety/dp/B01G3QF36K

Or this (Merkur seems like a good brand):

    https://www.amazon.com/Merkur-Long-Handled-Safety-Razor/dp/B000NL0T1G

It does not take long to really crave for a long handle.

Or maybe use what @Psalmanazar recommends which seems pretty reasonable:

    https://www.amazon.com/Wilkinson-Sword-Classic-Razor-Blades/dp/B0012Y1FCK

For a better straight razor I would consider this (there are better of course, but this one has some weight which one will need for control):

    https://www.amazon.com/Parker-Safety-Razor-Professional-Stainless/dp/B01D8SFFVO

Has been on my list for a long time. And may actually pull the trigger one of these days.

These require disposable blades, and could get a real straight razor like this:

    https://www.amazon.com/Dovo-Quality-Straight-Razor-Hollow/dp/B001ASQ2K8

But I don't want to deal with sharpening and stropping. Maybe later. Be aware that some of the real straight razors may not be shave ready and may need to be taken to a pro. Also be careful about what you get. Some are stainless steel and some are carbon steel. Carbon steel rust but it may be easier to sharpen. Stainless steel doesn't rust as easily but it may be a bitch to sharpen. Stainless might actually keep sharp longer. Note almost all disposable blades, cartridges and disposables tend to be stainless, and are fairly sharp. They work. But in the case of disposables and cartridges, I don't feel there is much art to it.

I would highly advise against any disposable shavette style straight razor, as they are some of the harshest razors to hold a disposable blade ever. This kind of blade essentially leaves the disposable blade exposed, including the very sharp square sides, and can cause some nasty cuts. Not only that, it is about half or even less than half the cutting length of a real straight razor. It is definitely best to go for an actual Dovo or other real straight razor.

Actually @ultrabike , the worst part of carts is the tendency to pull the hair out of the follicle a bit and get ingrown hairs. Also the three and five blades cartridges are effectively doing too many passes as we both know they have problems getting a smooth shave on one pass x 3-5 blades which causes more irritation.

Making the lather is the hardest part for newbies so I advise to just skip it and buy a can of whatever you like. Edge and Barbasol work the best for me as Gillette Foamy, Noxema, and Aveeno are way too watery.
