My father-in-law (R.I.P.), a 2nd generation Jamaican, was raised in Harlem. In the marines in WWII, he experienced extreme racism. After that, w/G.I. bill support, he chose a college as far from U.S. racism as possible: it was in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, Canada. While there were very few black people there, racism seemed not be much of a thing on PEI.

Then he fell in love with a white, freckled nurse (my future mother-in-law) who came from rural N.E. PEI, he went there to visit her family. They'd had zero exposure to black people. They seemed to be free from any racial animus.

He told of walking down a street there when a small boy came up and respectfully asked to touch his arm. He rubbed Ernie's forearm, then muttered, "The color doesn't come off." This child had never seen black skin.

I've been to PEI dozens of times and find it's still strikingly low in racism.

Of course I know the song; who doesn't! But that was around the point at which I stopped liking the Pink Floyd, so never had that album, or lyric-detail knowledge.
