A fork in the road. I’m right there with you right now. But my NBM makes a poor pairing with the Auteur, and I don’t think it’s driving them that well. A new amp is now a must.
How’re dynamics/large volume changes on the Auteur out of the Starlett vs. Utopia, do you think it’s getting the most out of them drive wise?
I haven’t heard either on bigger tube amps, so I can’t say that I’m getting the most out of them. I’m starting to wonder if beryllium is always going to take the experience down a notch for me.
I don’t think it can be avoided. The Verite takes the opposite approach to Utopia, and the Be effect is less pronounced. But it has a heavy bokeh effect that I think is there to mask what remains of it. You may find it a good compromise but there are unique tradeoffs.
@BenjaminBore You're getting the most out of the Auteur with Starlett. It's a great pairing. In terms of Utopia, you're leaving a bit on the table, but not that much.
@dubharmonic I had the same crossroads and ultimately picked the Utopia. Interested to see if you end up keeping both, or maybe perhaps try Verite at some time. Verite doesn't have any Be coloration, although timbre-wise it's clearly far from neutral.
@ChaChaRealSmooth to be clear, I don’t dislike the Utopia! When I visited Zach’s place I was able to try everything he makes (aside from Verite closed, which wasn’t released yet) and the Verite didn’t click with me like the Auteur did. Maybe when the world gets back to normal I’ll give them another listen!
