So here's my thesis: George R. R. Martin knows that what we really want is to not be given what we want.

Weiss and Benioff do not know this, and persist in giving us what we want, when in actuality we do not want it.

I miss when the show skipped battles and just showed the aftermath, because it had more important things to cover.

George R. R. Martin knows what we want: A story that does not cut corners, that is rich in context, that is original, that is both unpredictable and engaging.

Such things take time and effort. Those two things cost money (time is money). HBO does not want that to cost money, they want to make money. So we have a conflict of interests, and we get what we get. That said, so far so good relative to most other random TV/cable shows.

I love this show. I also love to bitch about it (unlike SW which is a disaster).

But for more awesome stuff, hard to beat the books.

EDIT: BTW, One of my favorite books is the Simarillion. That is a finished book. Based on what I saw from the Hobbit and LOTR, I doubt producers can make it any justice. So... hard to beat the books.

Not only rich in general context, but also rich in descriptions of food! I wonder if you cut out all the parts where GRRM goes super-deep into lavish descriptions of meals how much shorter the books would be?

This article shows some great examples, even claiming his writing about food in ASOIAF is steamier than his writing about the naughty bits...

I tried to read the first book and near fell asleep every other paragraph. I just can’t do that style of writing. Small brain.

HBO will then seed resentment among its customers and then lose those customers.

    --

This is all hearsay and rumors: HBO is in a weird place right now. They got bought out along with Warner (HBO was part of Warner) by AT&T and major changes are happening. HBO corporate has been leasing the awesome W.R. Grace building in NYC with big offices and big windows. They are in the process of moving to the new Hudson Yards spot where they will likely to be crammed into small cubes. They've axed some bigwigs at both HBO and Warner in an effort to streamline and consolidate film and television. AT&T has strong IT guys, but they care coming in hard and ripping the place up. People tell me it's not a good place to work, with fear that their jobs will be lost, and that they are being overworked.

It's important to find efficiencies with mergers, but ruining the magic that made the acquired companies work in the first place sort of defeats the purpose of the acquisition. I don't think this bean-counting approach will work. Totally different cultures too.

This might be AOL-Time Warner part deux.

This is happening at all sorts of levels in many different places. Sad to hear this is happening to HBO as well.

Hope GoT is not among the last products they put out.

There are a lot of mergers that make no sense. There was recently the bullshit magic word: "synergies". A lot of idiots with power these days. Things will settle as they always do.

Last we heard, weren't they working on some slavery-fan-fiction / Confederacy-won-the-war wet dream series?

I would have gotten this "concept" if it came from Brits (quite a few older Brits I know have this strange fascination with the American Civil War). But surprising this idea came from the GoT showrunners who I believe are American.

I really prefer this concept with The Man In the High Castle. With the Confederates winning the war, it just sounds like an excuse to be edgy and whip slaves and drop the N bomb.

LOL, exactly. At first, I thought to myself "Why are people getting so worked up? This sounds interesting". Upon further reflection: "This is the most fucked up idea ever. How the hell did HBO even allow a press release on this?"

I'm dumb though. When Obama was elected, people were like it's all "historic" and shit. I'm like why? Then I'm like... oh. I'm colorblind in that way. It's good I guess, but also kind of bad.

I could not believe it when they announced this project. It would take the most deft hand at all levels to pull off a show like this, and DD do not inspire confidence on that front.

Can hear and describe the most minute differences between different generations of DAC chips: check.

Doesn’t notice that Obama is the first black POTUS: check.

At least you figured it out ;)

That baby face surely can stab people good. I wasn't sold on Arya's character in previous seasons, but now, since she developed into one cold butcher, I want to see her in proper action.

Maybe I'm crazy but if they do it well it sounds like it could be a decent show. I quite liked the first two seasons of The man in the high castle. The main issue is that my confidence in DD is like @Boops said... next to none and I'm unsure what to expect of such a show.

The bit with the prophecy from the Red Priestess REALLY tipped their hand, and not in an enticing story driving way.

Really, nobody won, not even the viewers here.

Edit: On second thought after a moment to decompress, I'm gonna save the episode and watch it again for the action sequences while drunk tomorrow just because those were awesome. Old TV made the dark sections a bit harder to see, so maybe I'll get more enjoyment out of it on my monitor.

Huh. Didn't know "teleportation" was a part of the Faceless men's arsenal.

Overall I thought the episode was okay. The tone/atmosphere was great (hope your TV had good black levels!), but strategically it was a mess. Especially so after they retreated into Winterfell. The plot armor that some of the characters had was kind of ridiculous. I would have liked to have one other major character died (Tormund/Brienne/Grey Worm/Varys/Davos/Gendry), especially one of the fighters. For example, Jamie Lannister could barely fight a few seasons ago (and even admitted as much), yet how many countless wights did he kill???

And back to Arya, I really liked how they wrapped things up with Melisandre, but that Night King kill was kinda lame. Love that she was the one who killed him, but they needed to set it up better. She basically just materialized out of nowhere with a dozen white walkers and hundred or more wights surrounding the area.
