Hisense 65H9F? Supposed to be pretty good for a budget set, although not sure how well it does at not crushing blacks (or reliability).

I've been living with the Sony XBR49X900F for almost a year and I'm still impressed with the picture quality. No it's not OLED, but still very good, and the Netflix, Amazon Video, and Youtube apps are pretty bad ass. I was hooked on watching YT 4K firework videos for 2 solid weeks.

Id recommend some patience and wait till "Black Friday" (considering it pretty much the entire month of Nov now) for a chance for a deal on an OLED tv. I personally own a LG 55 in 2016 model with no issues or regrets (well.... I regret not getting the 65 inch). If not, price to performance I recommend the Sony 900 series which you have already selected. Not only is the picture great for the price, I believe Sony has the best upscaling software/tech.

I have the x900e. entirely satisfied with it.
but my friend just got the LG oled. do try to see it, quite stunning.

I just bought for my mom a x800g, Id like to know more why you think it sucks next to the x900....

    thanks

VA is supposed to do acceptable blacks and DR + good colour. Not sure about anything as big though.
I'm watching Netflix with some LG 55'' OLED and everything else sucks in comparison wrt black level graduations and overall dynamic range. The con is colours are a mess vs better LCDs.

    Sony dealer perspective.

The 65" 900F just went to $1300 starting yesterday, not sure if it will go down even further on BF/CM. Will know next week for BF week about expected price drops. The 900F came out last year and the 800G/850G/950G came out this year so expectation is the Sony is going to want to push down their 900F stock and BF is a biggest single sales day of the year. Talking to my Sony rep, word through the grapevine is that all the big players are going to be very aggressive and Sony will be following suit.

Bigger differences between 900F and 950G is the processor on the 950 is newer and it does Dolby Vision. It looks like the 900G is going be skipped since the H series is likely to get announced at CES and just makes more sense to come out with a 900H.

Sony had the 8k Z9G released earlier this year, ($13k for 85" and $70k for 98" is pretty insane) and OLEDs are going down every year in price. This year's A8G/A9G released at lower prices than the previous gen closeouts before Sony course corrected.

Been thinking about snagging possibly a small 43" or 49" for the bedroom myself. The 900F is more money than the 800G but does the higher refresh rate which I would like when I play games. OLED is nice but probably overkill for a small room.

The 900F hit $1300 at Abt, an authorized brick and mortar near me last year. Hard to imagine it couldn't hit a little lower this year.

I still have the 50" plasma which I moved into the living room. Even this is better than most ways than the LCD/LED. Just not as bright and won't do HDR.

As far as the TCL 6, it has no business being this good. I guess it was $999 last year and today it's $729. Compared directly with the Sony 900F. It's not as good, but close. Too close. A tad less bright and colors are not as accurate (white people look too red / pink). But dark greys are just as good. I can get the TCL colors and peak brightness close with simple tint and backlight adjustments. A full calibration might just make it just as good.

Would have loved to get the Sony, but walked out with a TV for $800 including tax. HDR (Spiderman) looked fantastic last night. I spent an hour before messing with the settings. I will go OLED when it comes down in price, which it will.

I forgot you guys were Sony dealers. I will call you when I am ready in a few years. I imagine myself going to Sony when I make the next jump. All the colorists I know and the gear in the color rooms can't be wrong.

The TCL is a great budget buy, indeed!
It's good for gaming too (low latency).

Its cool, we help the headphone guys coming in all the time get shiny new Sony TVs lol. If you ever need anything else video related, hit us up.

Good idea, I was listening to a podcast about them talking about the methods used for tracking your viewing and it was pretty awful.

my mom received the sony x800g. I immediately noticed how even 1080p wasnt bright enough.
so we went to best buy and they have the x900 next to the x800g. The x900 colours are way more saturated and lifelike. the x800g colours seem washed out and dull. we returned the x800g and she got a open box x900

We are finishing up a gut renovation of our apartment and our home theater needs were lagging all other work. But on Black Friday weekend we ran out to pick up three TVs while all the sales were going on. For our living room, we ultimately decided on a 65” Samsung Frame. I get that it is a lifestyle TV and not the best picture quality for the dollar by a long shot, and all the sales people readily admitted this, but my wife really liked the super flush mount aspect of it and we both appreciated the art mode, which if chosen well can look quite nice and convincing (with the wrong art and too much backlighting it can look super gimmicky and terrible, but we also saw nice presentations of art that we liked).

Anyway, we haven’t taken delivery yet so it is still very easily returnable to Best Buy. Right now I have an 11 year old 52” Sony Bravia LCD (1080 P, 120 hz), which I think was their top of the line (or close to it) at the time. I am still perfectly happy with the picture quality on that TV and but for our renovations would have probably hung on to it for a while longer, although the size of it is ridiculous compared to any contemporary TV.

My feeling is that since we kind of liked the lifestyle aspect of the Frame it was a good choice as long as it isn’t a step back in terms of picture quality from my current Sony. The sales people said this was a definite step up because . . . ten years of technology. Curious if that is actually true. Should I have any concern that this might be worse in any meaningful respect from the old Sony. As long as it is a minor improvement or no worse than what I have, I am OK with not getting the last word in picture quality given other features. But if it is a step back in any way, then I might want to reconsider.
    Any thoughts are appreciated.

There has been a big fat zero in advancements in LCD technology in all that time.

VA, IPS & TN panels still have the same ballpark contrast, black & white levels from 10+ years ago.
Unless you have a local dimming panel, which the quality is determined completely on the number of zones it has.

Unless you care about resolution, color gamut, brightness, HDR capability, or motion processing.

I'll give you HDR & resolution, but brightness & color gamut haven't really changed much.
Native motion resolution is still 300 lines of motion resolution for every LCD, unless you use the interpolation smoothing features, which is also tech that is over a decade old.

I'd say it all depends on your preferences and expectations. I have a 2008 Sony XBR 37" in my bedroom that still has better color and contrast than a good number of modern LCD TVs. I basically had to go OLED to get the jump I was looking for without compromise (and at under $2K for a 65", I think it was a great deal). I will also add that, at its thickest, my OLED TV is maybe 3" where the guts are and is a literal piece of glass for the rest of it. My wall mount can reduce down to maybe 1.5" (I keep mine extended from the wall for a bigger picture from my couch). So basically it looks like a floating piece of glass - a very nice look. I also have a very nifty art screen saver, which most TVs now have an art screen saver or have one available via app. I guess I went a long way to say you can get a lot of what the Frame TV offers either for less or get a better picture for the same price. I have recommended the Frame TV to a commercial client for their waiting room, and it works in a friend's billiard room for background sports, etc., but I wouldn't recommend it for the home as a primary viewing TV. It has roughly the guts of a mid range Samsung, which unfortunately puts it behind quite a few TVs when it comes to actual picture quality for the money. But that is just me, I prioritized picture quality for my primary viewing device.
