High impedence beryllium driver with a larger surface area and ZMF presentation, at a lower price. So long, Utopia, it was nice knowing you, ya’ greedy bastid.
Not sure how he's pulling off a 300ohm impedance. Although Beryllium is light for a metal, it's still heavier than plastic, so if the coil is too thin and light, it might act up when trying to push the diagphram for bass. Just a theory.
Just watched the video. It's PVD beryllium, not solid beryllium like the Utopia. It's closer to the Lyra II diagphram, but big. Honestly the openback Atticus is more interesting to me.
So if I understand correctly it’s a thin layer of Be over another material?
I hadn’t expected it to have the performance of the Utopia, but I am hoping it’s a more balanced set of trade offs with improved timbre and taller imaging.
It should be more damped than a pure Be dome. Also, the cheaper cost allowed him to make it 50mm without costing $5k. The Be cracking issue mentioned in the pdf worries me a bit though.
Looking into it a bit (there was extensive talk about this when the Utopia released) it looks like fears are misplaced and the amount of beryllium required to cause harm is more than the tiny amount you would find on a headphone driver. That is IF the driver would suddenly turn to dust and you'd inhale it or you fancied a snack and decided to eat the driver in the first place.
