I've not been able to compare them directly at home, just in a store setting, but from what I can tell at least they're within spitting distance of each other in terms of technicalities outside of what you'd expect from the one being less thick-sounding. Then again, could always be wrong given my mid-fi background :))
In all I just chalk it up to a sonic (and aesthetic, at least for the older versions) preferences thing— 650 is amazing for its relatively cosy presentation, while the HD600 is pretty damn excellent for a more aggressive sound (slightly *too* aggro in the upper mids but it helps with some music).
The HD600 can be just a tad shouty with vocals while just a tinge brighter. Treble is a little bit more grainy. I prefer the smoother treble of the HD650.
Haha, nah, I'd say to trust more experienced listeners when they say certain pairings can make the HD650 punch hard; my impressions are out of good-value stuff mostly, i.e. G109A, ZDT Jr., and Sunrise3+LPS, so nothing particularly "exciting". I'm actually curious to hear the HD650 out of a Valhalla 2 or Mjolnir 2, but no one I know locally has em.
Eh, no use whining over what I can't audition easily.
