Cuz of my grandpa I grew up with old MGM westerns and Hollywood classics; because of my being a weird kid I got into all sorts of weird genres of horror and the like. Martial arts films were great too, but it wasn't until I saw Ip Man back in 2009 that I really fell for the genre. Each movie was great (except 2), so this is a bit bittersweet for me, knowing there'll be no more.
Story is predictable, deals with stuff about Chinese immigrants settling in San Francisco— the weird nuances of under-the-table dealings were familiar. Fight choreography was grand though; moves didn't have the same "impact" you'd get from something more modern, but the movements were nostalgic for the old classics. Hella fun!
Will say that my only reservation recommending it is awareness that I'm fond of cheese and tropes, and also how this film doesn't necessarily portray USMC flatteringly.
I can jokingly call it propaganda, but perhaps that's not too far off. It's got entertaining fights though, and at least takes a stance against inequality.
