A music venue here is streaming archived concerts (live music is off due to virus). They were using Youtube, now they are using Facebook. I think that, despite my poor hearing, I can detect a difference. What I am getting reminds me of the days when I used to test bit-rate differences...

I don't believe in "High-Definition" music at all. But I sure believe in the effect of low bitrate. The effect is a lack of involvement.

And when bitrates get really low, even speech becomes lacking in interest. 32kbs-MP3 humour isn't funny!

So, anybody know? I know it is variable in Youtube, but is Facebook inherently lower-bit rate?

Or am I entering my audiophool dotage!

I have no data on this (other than my own ears) but that has been my experience as well. Facebook, even with "better" equipment (some of the livestreams are just horrible) doesn't sound quite as good to me.

Facebook sucks for audio and video, it's really just a convenience thing with them.

YouTube videos I believe top out at 126kbps AAC while YouTube *Music* maxes out at 256kbps AAC, which is good enough for me as long as I'm not going full audiophile.

And yes, extremely low bitrates make even my favourite tracks sound blergh. This goes into more detail:

Listening again today. Nice concert. But there is that /effect/. It is like it lacks depth. But it is listenable, so hey, perhaps my hearing is worse again today! lol

Anyway, thanks for the confirmation that my anecdotal experience might actually be data!
