I am just agast at why no one was slowing or stopping in the right lanes before the Tesla hit. I guess business must carry on, poor flipped guy is just walking next to median barrier.
@purr1n It was interesting to hear one of the established automotive guys in Germany talking about Tesla. The customer is the beta tester. Similar to MS or any software company, I guess.
Branding this thing "autopilot" is downright irresponsible, though. Think of it more like Cruise Control 2.0 and you'll do fine. But it's easy to become "switched off" driving on a freeway. That's also why other vehicles are slow to react as @bixby pointed out.
The driver said he assumed the autopilot would work. That's why we see the tufts of smoke on the brakes when the car was about to hit the truck. The driver realized the autopilot wasn't doing anything, and when he hit the brakes, it was too late!
I was very quickly disabused of my "full self-driving" hopes when making a trip down from the bay to socal last year -- supposedly a route they'd have some of the richest data on.
Haven't turned it on since and definitely won't trust it with stop signs or traffic lights for at least a few years. Agree that the branding unfortunately encourages over-reliance and poor driving behaviors.
