Might as well just get the cheapest Android phone you can find that has Android 8 or newer. (edit - Android 8 came out August 21 2017 so any model that new or newer should work)
@philipmorgan no. LG is out of Smartphone game and that LG V40 won't get any more updates. If you wanna use Android for a DAP get the cheaper Shanling M3X. If you still want Android, get a newer phone for casual listening since all Android models since 8.0 support LDAC.
it looks like Spotify support goes back about 6 versions to Android 5.0. I wonder if that means in 2 to 3 years the Shanling M3X will be too old (specs say Android 7.1 and I wouldn't bet on any more updates)
Likely there will be substantial revisions to Spotify if/when lossless releases.. that might break compatability with older Android releases. I'd wait for that before locking into Android 8.
Word. So... to the Android n00b, are there models/manufacturers to avoid/prefer in the cheap phone space? Used deals that are particularly good? I'm not lookin for luxe hardware, just cheap, good battery, durable, good value.
I had a Sony smartphone that would had work for ya, I sold it. Any 1-3 year old smartphone should be good. Catch is more and more phones are getting rid of their headphone jacks. Try a good condition Samsung phone or a Google Pixel to start off.
If you only care about bluetooth und dap functionality I'd suggest a Nokia G10. Cheap, huge battery, Android 11. Slow CPU doesn't matter, even my 5 year old LG G6 still works great as a dap.
V30 is my fav but I never tried the V40. If I was in the US I would've definitely have one. This said since the codec you want is widely available it makes a more broad choice. Won't be easy with much more to choose from.
The V40 sounds great from its own headphone output. If you have no plan to use that, then I would suggest go for a newer model like the OnePlus or Nokia that still has software support.
