The door is slightly in excess of 400 lb, thats you need the torsion spring. I guess it weighs so much because the panels are thick and have insulation in them.... Not exactly sure
This has happened to me three times in three different houses over the past 15 years or so. The first time the garage door made a massive sound when it spontaneously broke middle of the night and sent me creeping into the garage w/ my AR-15. 2nd time was during a real emergency and I lifted it with some adrenaline-fueled dad strength.
LOL DigMe, I had just opened the door of the 2nd fridge we have in the garage when it popped on me (about an hour after the garage door had last been used). That garage door is lucky I was not armed at the time ;)
My first thought was that someone had wrecked their car into my garage door so I went outside. When there was nothing to see there I could only assume someone was in my garage. I couldn’t imagine such a crash happening any other way.
