Yeah, that was the appeal for me too: retrain myself to pull out the phone-sized e-ink reader instead of the phone to avoid the phone black hole and get some reading done instead during those little breaks in life.
@SoupRKnowva depends. Better with B/W text since there's no chopping page turning animation. With manga it can get a little choppy. If using Android e-Ink just use Tachiomi app.
I think it's good enuf. :) I've got a Boox Note Air (10" android e-reader) and I've found the Kindle app totally usable on that. I don't have SUPER high standards (PDF reflow and good EPUB usability are my priorities), but it's been sarisfactory for me.
a really dumb question to start though, is there any good drm free epub ebook store front? like qobuz for ebooks? Cause as a ebook layperson who has been using a kindle since 2016, to a close enough approximation, Kindle _is_ the ebook market
@SoupRKnowva not really. Different stores have a DRM-free selection, but it pails when comparing to Amazon. As a weeb who heavily buys manga on digital, I don't really have a choice in the matter but to go with Amazon due to well the history of unauthorized manga scans.
lol I know I don't need that Hi Reader, but man I want one to play with. Ive currently got an Oasis I got at the beginning of the year, I upgraded from a paper white I got in early 2016. I really wanted the physical buttons and flush screen.
after doing more reading, I think id get a Hisense Touch instead. I saw someone post of a pic of the hi reader next to an iPhone 11, it looks bigger than id want for the niche use case Id want it for, the Touch looks to be a pretty good size though.
Id just be using it for novels, that's the majority of what I read, and I don't do manga or comics. I just really like the idea of having something phone sized I could put in my pocket to read on. I would guess I order one of these by the end of the week lol
From the reviews I been reading on them...yes but you have to use a different app store to get the Kindle APK or just slideload the Kindle APK into the device. None of the Hisense devices have Google Play Services, so you have to use a different frontend to get apps. Personally if using this device I would only need Tachiyomi and Kindle.
Yeah, excited to hear how it works for you @SoupRKnowva ! On my Boox Note Air (which does have the Play store so not 100% relevant) I use DriveSync to get a GDrive folder full of PDFs/EPUBs/etc avail on the device and easily opened by apps there.
Post in the e-Ink thread, since only two of us really want to know. I'm still leaning heavily on the Hi Reader since the 6.7 screen will be good enough for manga (even if aspect ratio is not ideal).
I saw someone somewhere mention the Boox version of the kindle app has an option for 0 animations on page turns, need to harass amazon on social media to add that to all versions of the app haha
LOL, I just ordered a Boox Poke 3. I was craving a pocket-size reader to complement my Boox Note Air, and I like the phone form-factor of the ones we've been discussing here, but I printed out some size comparison cards and the extra width of the Poke doesn't bother me.
huh, the poke 3 is like smack in the middle of the widths of the Hisense Touch and the kindle oasis I already have. anyways, im excited to get it, ill write something in that ereader thread for sure. hopefully it leads to me reading even more
I got it in today. First impressions are that I dont know how to use android at all. also, using the eink for anything but reading is a nightmare, even light web browsing is kinda awful. But I got Kindle installed and working. Using the volume buttons to change pages doesn't even incur the page sliding animation, so that's a plus!
