I had a CA-1a for a while and loved it - SR1a with sub-bass, different staging, slightly less resolving. I only sold it because I also had the SR1a, which scratched a similar itch. It's well worth playing with the two different kinds of pads. I also bought a second set of the donut pads as I intended to play around with cutting out some of the foam to tweak the sound (but never got round to it).
@M3NTAL - LCD- is warmer, more mid-forward, smoother, sweeter, with similarly fast transients.
CA-1a donut pads = lighter tonality, tighter bass, more sub-bass, a bit less warmth, w/ cooler, drier mids, & more sparkle & treble extension + more impact, slam, macrodyamic contrast, air & more open, spacious staging.
CA-1a w/ coffee bean pads = leaner, cooler & drier in tonality, closer to SR1a w/ studio neutral tuning, & more treble zing, bigger stage, more open-sounding.
CA-1a is great for pad and amp rolling. I liked warmer amps with it. A friend, to whom I sold my pair, liked CA-1a with Piety, more so even than Jot R.
CA-1a going on loaner? Very interested in this. Supernaut is stupid good, and appreciate Donald designing it with easily accessible reasonably priced toobz
I have the filters, and they do change the sound quite a bit. Not sure if you can use my set, but maybe we could figure something out if you are interested @purr1n
