This is playing from a Pi 3 running Volumio going into a Audio-GD NFB-28 into bridged Crown XLI 1500 that normally power Magnepan LRS. I'm bypassing my dbx PA2 that normally separates the sub-bass for the LRS. While I do have a RTA-M for the DBX as well as audio interface, REW takes too much effort to set up.

How do they sound...? Like tiny satellite speakers half their size. I'm hoping the paper drivers burn in a bit.

I don't really even hear the single full range driver imaging that I hear with my Fibhorn 2, which is a 3 inch driver back loaded "horn" (though diyaudio experts think it's technically a transmission line). Fibhorn 2 also extends farther in treble (around 10k) and has flatter midbass.

Listened to it for a couple of hours last night more. After toeing them in 15 degrees, they do have full range imaging in the mid-frequencies. At bass frequencies. you can hear the passive radiator kicking in, but it sounds totally different than the full-range driver, and is also a bit louder. They also weird when playing cymbals. It does doesn't just roll off treble like the Fibhorn 2 or most other speakers. Instead it plays some of the harmonics and not others in a weird pattern. Might be due to the whizzer cone.

LOL, this is hilarious. How is the suckout at 500-700Hz. Do you think it's driver, or room / table / floor bounce? At least it's cheap at $100.

One can pay a lot more of small speakers like this: https://www.superbestaudiofriends.o...n-orca-and-fostex-p1000-bh-measurements.6543/

Think it was the driver and positioning. Might have been the reason why the imaging sounded off without the toe in.

I heard the PSB Alpha P3 and P5 about a year ago. I really liked the sound of the P3, it was a bit better than the P5 though it didn't go as deep. Definitely worth it for $200 if you had a subwoofer.

But I bought this speaker for its weird design.

Nice to see they found a use for all those 60's AM car radio speakers sitting in warehouses. ;)

For comparison, using the same setup for the Fibhorn 2 and JBL LSR305 MK1 (minus the amplifiers and volume set at double).

I guess the 500-700Hz hole might be measuring system or room, looking at it now.

Those definitely look like room nulls (comb filter effect). 125, 200, 480, 700 , Any chance the speakers are away from wall behind them a foot or two? If yes, try pushing them back toward the wall for less nulls but maybe a bass peak you may have to work around. Or you could go the other way and get them 3 feet or more out.

They are about 3-5 feet from all walls, with a table/shelf in between and 10 feet from me.

thanks for sharing the JBL measurements as it's a good reference for what I am seeing with your setup.

haven't heard of the fibhorn before and am looking it up. I've always been curious about small drivers in big enclosures.

Looking at the Fibhorn website, they don't sell my exact speaker anymore. They switch the Model 2a driver to the 2 and 2b. I have a plastic Tangband driver, which is still listed in the 2 specifications, but it appears they switched to a paper Peerless driver that is slightly larger. My drivers also do not have EnABLing done, which supposedly reduces speaker to air boundary turbulence.

I've got a pair of those in my basement actually, got them cheap at goodwill. Use them when I am waxing my skis down there.
Not bad, not very good though, but mine are powered by a tiny amp that is like the size of a bottle cap and only needs a 5v power supply.
Never noticed the whizzers on mine though, didn't even realize the grills came off.

My first wife brought a pair into our marriage, once again a basement setup in her parents house. Rock on dudes!
I replaced them with some large Advents and soon after we divorced....hmm?
