I have not heard the original ether, but generally agree with your concern. With similar logic with yours, I decided to go for flow after looking at various measurements.

Great insights on the Flow! Really appreciate it.

Also, anyone who quotes Prof. Feynman is good in my book. Cheers

I really like them actually! Especially after changing the stock pads to angled pads. I do want to try the flow to see how it sounds.

I used the non leather audeze pads as the originals were to small and causing some discomfort... But I keep falling asleep in bed with them on now...so comfortable....

I have asked for a pair of the C pads but as soon as I did Headfi had a post saying that the new Electrostats Pads are going on sale after Jan..... So will wait to see what people think with a larger inner diameter......

The weeks waiting for the upgrade to return is killing me... I have tinkered with my setup and made my older Bowers and Wilkins P7'S sound good or I have Gone Ether blind...
    Transformers and filters. ....
But I want the Ethers back to start verifying the changes.......

    Keep smiling
    Dave

I got my Ether C Flow back from Mr. Speakers, and sailed past the 200 hour mark. I haven’t noticed the sound changing after the first few days of playing music.

The ear cups on my pair were replaced, but they sound the same as before. I’ve been disappointed with my experience with the C Flow. I listened to an original Ether C in May of this year which was paired with a Chord Mojo connected to an iPad running Tidal. It may have been slightly thin, but overall it was more pleasant than the Flow version.

I can’t say the C Flow version is better. The sub bass is more apparent, and it’s a different experience compared to the HD800 I owned for 6 years. The bass doesn’t pop in until raising the volume, but when you do it is accompanied by brightness. It might seem strange coming from someone who used to own a HD800, but the C Flow brightness bothers me.

The brightness is one thing, but the biggest issue is the sound stage. I don’t mind that the sound stage is smaller. With a reduction in sound stage I believe you get other advantages. However, the sound stage on my pair continue to sound separated between left, and right channel. It gets in the way of the music when it is split apart.

I’ve contemplated sending a message in regarding my issues, but I feel like my problems are like a creaky door on a new car, it’s not feasible to fix.

With the C, that's how I am hearing it too. The standard C can be a bit thin, but with a bit of tweaking and synergistic upstream components, it can sound pretty good. I have recommended the C to several people have who have asked for a closed headphone, along with recommendations for suitable amps.

The Flow version of the C doesn't simply have a tendency toward a thin tilt anymore. It's bright and peaky. The bass might seems tighter and more articulate, but it more muted. The mids seemed more muted too. I also heard an extreme left and right side headstage with a hole in the middle.

I far prefer the standard versions of the Ether where the tonal balance is straight rather than more V shaped / treble peaky. Honestly, I'm just not hearing any significant improvements in technicalities from the Flows. The Flows are different rather than better, but this difference, mainly in tonal balance, can sound better to individuals if that makes any sense. There will likely be another model next year anyway.

I keep thinking maybe I should keep the Ethers as they are and cancel the upgrade?? The $500 or $350 upgrade fee can buy myself another great headphone... $500 is good for a Beyer T1, $350 is good for so many others I don't know...

I had the same experience with the Alpha dogs, they sounded so smooth and were quite comfortable that I fall asleep...

Its funny.. A few people, including myself, complained that we didn't like the Ether C Flow at the Chicago meet in Aug of this year... MrSpeakers replied to the HF thread saying that there was a problem with the unit.. After all is said and done though, multiple people including Tyll heard exactly what it was I didn't like about these headphones at the meet.

On the otherhand I really did love the open Flows and picked them up soon after that meet.. Still using them and still love them.

was not a fan of either of the ether cs despite getting the chance to dem Dan's personal pair (embrassing experience for me to be honest as i had to squint / flinch when the treble peak was triggered) ... loved their industrial design tho.

many here may not like audeze lcds but for me at least, they got the scale of sound largely correct, Ether C / CF sounded small and constipated to me.

Yeah, that "retraction" of sorts makes me wonder if anything else was going on in the background...

Agreed, something just seems odd to me. But hey, Dan can now tweet and announce the C Flow is on the WOF https://twitter.com/mrspeakers/status/809898815469850625

Interestingly enough, I imagined innerfidelity/Tyll will say that Ether C flow is probably not worth an upgrade and not too much better than Ether C, even before I read his review. What makes it more interesting is that I personally haven't even heard the C and C flow yet.

Well. I don't really know if I want to send the Ether in for upgrade. To be honest, I like what it is right now, and an upgrade will only be paying $350/$500 to try something new... plus the waiting time is absurdly long. Will update whether I'd upgrade or not when I finally get the upgrade chance after, I don't know, 3 years maybe?

The waiting times should drop down after Xmas... It's been a killer waiting since the 9th of November...But I saved some cash as UK'S electromod bundled a batch over to Dan... I should have them next week..
So me to Electromod.... Then to the US...upgrade and back... Not to bad near a month...
But the Ether has had a massive sales demand and a big influx of upgrades..
Dan mentioned he has extra staff on the books ..so Jan Feb should be faster if you can wait and get the upgrade.... I think..
Power upgrades have helped turn my old B+Ws P7'S in to something near to good..
I can't wait to hear what these sound like and have fun burning in again...
Happy xmas non-denominational festive break... time off no work holidays..
    whatever..
    Just have fun be safe..

I have been waiting since the end of September, realized that I need to sign up to be in the line and contacted MrSpeakers since early October... The waiting time is so long...

This is why I can't stand a lot of the audio community all this backtracking and bullshit. I like Tylls reviews but sadly like most reviewers that are in a similar position there's more going on behind the scenes.
