Thank god! I heard they are using their own shitty proprietary connection protocol for inconsistent performance, to avoid shitty regular bluetooth like everyone else.

I wonder if we (analog devices) made that. We made the force touch thing apple invented.

I hear they're going wireless only for this generation, with their own proprietary tech of course. Very excited. Maybe in the future they can invent some kind of way to connect headphones to a phone with a cable, that would be so awesome. I wouldn't be surprised if they could figure it out, I mean they are so clever and inventive. I'd be the first to buy one.

The current wired pods don't stay in my ears longer than 30 seconds. I'd lose / break these immediately.

I heard Apple is going to be selling a special lanyard that tethers your AirPods to your iPhone so that you don't lose them.

So, they aren't using Bluetooth? Does that mean the device won't have Bluetooth and only their proprietary shit?

Just imagine who you'll impress by walking around with these iButtPlugs hanging out of your ears, though.

This is actually an awesome idea. By them while you can. They'll probably go up like ipod classics. The last audiophile friendly iphone.

cause bluetooth is a steaming pile of user hostile garbage? And what makes you think whatever proprietary connection they may or may not be using will be shitty?

of course it will have bluetooth, just go look at the specs page.

I'll upgrade my iPhone 6 whenever work wants to buy me a new phone. I think I'm due in January.

I'm going to miss the ability to listen and charge at the same time w/ wired phones.

Otherwise I don't care. I'm only interested in a new MacBook Pro.

This is fair, and when I wrote my reaction I had the thought "f**k, what if it ends up 'just working'?" Still, I think it's shitty anytime a company makes a proprietary connection, and that was the point of my criticism. As I understand it, they are using Bluetooth plus some secret applesauce (ha!) such that these things only work fully with an iOS or osx device, and with limited function as normal bluetooth (I wonder how their battery life is affected when used without the applesauce?). f**k that! I don't care how awesome low power they are, they still only rock 5hr battery life, and they are about as only marginally more useful outside the apple ecosystem as headphones with lightning jacks. I understand the arguments about why to move away from the 3.5mm jack, but I don't see what apple is doing here as innovation, I see it as crafting an unnecessary divide to sell more products.

EDIT: the secret sauce, which has something to do with connecting even better than regular bluetooth is what is limited to iOS and osx devices. You can still use them as regular bluetooth headphones but without the amazing applesauce connectivity. This mitigates my frustration, but I still think this is a step sideways, not forward, due to battery life and the nature of wireless v. wired audio signal.

You say unnecessary, I think they find it "necessary " to sell more products. Create markets if you will, not only for products but licensing fees - this is the Apple way. Besides, they need to make money quick to pay the EU fines. They of course must have know there will be a pushback and their will probably arrive shortly various iPhone 7 compatible devices on the market, what the qauility will be is another matter. I remember when Nokia was the biggest player in town and they also had all that dongle nonsense...
