So I got in a Maglev record player with the Project 9cc Carbon fiber arm and Ortofon OM10 cartridge to review. In part because I was curious to see if it was just a stunt, some cute tchotchke that got millennial approval, but had no underlying cojones. And also because it was available, lol.

All come to those who wait, but briefly, this thing is seriously good. The cart has a scrim to it’s sound and a tendency to flatten dynamics, but it $80, after all. I can’t quite take apart the arm, and I don’t have another MM Cartidge to swap in yet, but I can tell the turntable itself has intrinsic strengths that deserve consideration. On the Kab strobe 33 1/3 was pretty solid (as one can be with the KAB )and while it was a tad fast at 45, it was fairly stable. No herky jerky speed fluctuations I’ve seen in a tables at this price. It’s ink black backgrounds, sense of pace and overall tonality is inviting. I will be listening the next few days to further get a handle on its pros and cons, but the sound is really enticing, initially.

Wow. It would be really good if this thing is not just a gimick: hope it works out that way.

And, even if it should turn into a piece of interior decoration, it's going to be pretty damned good at that! I don't think I could bear to turn it off. I'd probably just sit staring at it!

Only bad things come from decoupling the tonearm from the platter. I would not recommend a mag-lev table for any sort of critical listening application due to the differential movement that can occur in that type of design. It does look cool though...

If you could elaborate on the deleterious effects one can expect, I would be obliged. That way I can better discern causality?

There's got to be at least some slop, i.e non-zero tolerance, in the pivot to spindle distance over time. Therefore your cart alignment and null point locations will be non-constant. I'm not sure this is targeted towards an audience who would care, though.

At the price, they bloody well should care - as well as ask why it only comes with such a cheap cart.

Not sure I'd want a nice cart in such close proximity to an electromagnet that is powerful enough to levitate the entire platter?

I suspect the variance will be more vertical than horizontal, as the motors underneath are fixed. As to the magnetic force that dictates the repulsion, and thus effective axis, I am unsure stable that will be.

The rumble is quite low, and there is some groove noise, wow and flutter is speced at high <.17%. I suspect this cost more to build than they expected, but that's sheer speculation. They also now have a non levitating model, I see.

And only MM so far, at less than 9 gms cart weight. As you can't track more than 1.5 grams anyway (at this time) an MC is kind of moot.

I suspect the variance will be more vertical than horizontal, as the motors underneath are fixed. As to the magnetic force that dictates the repulsion, and thus effective axis, I am unsure about overall stability. However, this is all idle speculation, and not my favorite waste of time.

There is angular momentum and variation in the electromagnet supply, sp I think multi-axis displacement. So variable VTA, VTF, and zenith. Perhaps it's telling that "Mag Lev" followed this with a non-levitating table?

Now, I'm not sure I read it right. You read it but need a hearing aid adjustment? o_O

Unintended consequences of new house, new gear and new media console...

A smaller room required a new media console of a certain max size - which isn't deep enough to fit the new amp and won't be long enough for amps to fit between the 'table and an incoming, larger TV - hence, an extra shelf.

This board at 17 3/4" x 14 1/4" is a good fit for Rega-size TTs, but whatever size board you need these legs should work. 10 cm high and adjustable for leveling, you might also put sorbothane discs under the feet for isolation.

Recently got a new rack and phono stage! Also upgraded my arm a while back with the tonearm damper from KAB.

Thanks, yes, it all still works perfectly. I left the mixer and am now using the turntable with a Schiit Mani.

Classic 2SE with Dynavector 10x5. For now using phono built into the Nakamichi Stasis TA-3A.
Things I have on hand but am waiting until I get used to the current sound (not to mention breaking in the brand new 10x5):
    Vista Audio Phono-2
HRX Center Weight and Periphery Ring
    Terrastone Footers
