Just wait. A few months. All will be revealed.

I just got a little happier with my M2U. I thought it sounded a little too good to be true.

With the conjecture on a 4490 Modi 3 now out the window, can we now safely assume a Modi 3 multibit is on the way? ^_^

How far back does this chip change go back? It feels silly, but I am left wondering if I should sell my M2U so that I can buy.... an M2U.

A Modi 3 multibit would REALLY hit the spot though.

If you're thinking like that, I'd say get a Bifrost.

Good things happen to people who wait. Well, it won't hurt to wait. More choices. Or just buy now if waiting hurts too much. And shhhh. Don't let anyone on the other site know about these discussions.

I just noticed that if you rearrange the letters in 'Marvey' it spells 'Satan'.

Waiting is the hard part. I'm guess it's safe to buy an Asgard 2 right now for a much better volume pot? My main complaint with my M2U desktop setup isn't even the sound but killing the slight steel wouldn't be bad.
The right answer is to drink cheap beer for a year and buy the Yggdrasil.

Does this mean there might have been a silent revision of the DS Gungnir as well to the 4490 or a different chip in the series?

Jason or Mike mentioned that the existing Schiit products wouldn't change this year. Just some new product categories like 2ch amp, preamp, and maybe the new magic box. All will be complimentary to the existing line. So no Modi 3, Asgard 3 etc. But as we've discovered in this thread, this doesn't exclude unannounced "improvements".

Yep, the Modi 2 Uber is now the 4490. The 4396 is end-of-life and getting scarce. And the 4490 sounds better. They've been shipping that way for about a month now.

The Uber's USB input is also now self-powered, not bus-powered...mainly to improve compatibility with power-marginal USB ports (cough...Windows...cough). Don't get too excited about this, since depending on internal power dissipation capability, self-power may not end up on everything. The M2U 4490/self-power runs warmer than the old M2U, and we almost decided to nix the self-power due to this (not because of any reliability concerns, but because some people get iggy if their equipment runs warm for some reason.)

Aside: WHY a friggin USB receiver needs 150mA to run, I have no idea...Audioquest went to a full-custom design based on a general-purpose microprocessor to get theirs down to like 30mA. The XMOS receivers are even worse than our C-Media ones, too...

Just noticed the Modi 2 site got updated.
What's going to happen to the Modi 2 non-Uber when the 4396 hits EOL?

    @schiit Jason,

with the Uber USB being self powered, can an IOS device (iPhone/iPad) with the Lightning USB cable + USB cable now recognize/use a M2U4490 ?
ie. no more "USB draws too much power" warnings when connecting to IOS devices?

    thank you.

I was so excited for the updated Modi 2 Uber until I remembered I already got the Bifrost 4490.

I'm still going to get excited about a USB board upgrade. And I don't even own a Bifrost yet.

You and me both. I've been trying to convince myself not to pick one up next week "just to compare". It's never just to compare.

@AustinValentine but wouldn't it be nice to know ;) Well, at least for me. I'm sure someone will compare them for us sooner or later.

Does anyone know which of the 5 filters in the AK4490 is used by Schiit in M2U 4490 and Bifrost 4490?

Edit: I would hazard a guess that it is minimum phase, or whatever AK calls that.
