Such a cool look. I was at the Schiitr this past weekend and finally got to listen to their two channel stuff. That stuff sounds great.

One could build a very good looking and compact all Schiit two channel rig. If the TT sounds as good as the rest of their gear it will probably sound pretty excellent as well.

Im thinking of doing all Schiit setup as a second setup and this would round it out perfectly!

I just finished watching the video and had a question for you guys. Is it normal to have to give the turntable a little assistance to get it going? (Time 22:52 and 23:44)

For some tables yes, depends upon the mass of the platter, torque of the motor, and initial slippage of the band. My VPI with the big platter is barely is able to get going by itself, a little nudge helps.

I have seen a few others that need that. Nothing to worry about. Saw the turntable in person yesterday at RMAF and I though it looked great in person. Heard it through a Ragnarok 2 with Ether headphones. Sounded very good. Nothing was amiss. I operated it and worked fine. No concerns so far on my end. Still more to learn though. There was a young lady at RMAF who was looking for a belt drive TT and when she saw the SOL she was totally smitten by it. She was shocked at the lower price. Here boyfriend better help her get it.:)

My Dad and I talked to one of the guys who helped on the MoFi turntable project here at RMAF. We talked to him while listening to the flagship MoFi TT. My Dad asked him what he thought about the SOL and he said that he was very impressed and thinks it will punch way above its weight.

In the video, the motor was DC powered by a wall wart. I don’t see why you couldn’t get your own wall wart.

Edit: this was wrong. See below

Surprisingly the power supply for the motor can make a difference. I would have never believed it until I had that issue exposed in my Pro-ject The Classic when I upgraded to a Pangea phono interconnect.

I can completely believe that. But no way that wall wart is not El Primo DC power. Frankly, I was really unimpressed with the *apparent* quality. I will not pass judgment until I see one. It may well be that Schiit invested where it mattered and not where it didn’t.

Consider the price of the TT and the fact that you can upgrade the power supply. This TT is impressive for the price.

You can't really do that: a transformer isn't gonna change the frequency, which affects the timing, which is also what this motor is used for. You'd have to also get new machined flywheels of the appropriate size to adjust the timing.

Unless you like your tempo a little muddy ;)

Edit: I wonder if it'd be possible to engineer constant-size flywheels and a switch for timing that would allow Schiit to have a single motor unit run for both 110/60 and 220/50. That'd possibly bring parts cost down. Still would probably need 2 different transformers.

Is it a DC or AC motor? If it’s AC why does it have a wall wart?

Maybe it is DC?! The Modi & Magni both use AC wall warts.

    Edit: from the Sol FAQ:

Why isn't there an option for 230V countries?
Sol uses an AC motor, so it's designed for 60Hz AC, like we use in the USA. Unfortunately, nearly every country with 220-240VAC runs 50Hz AC, so the motor would run too slow. When we have a 50Hz version of the motor, we'll open up ordering for international voltages.

Jason has said it was to be DC a brush motor. Chances are you could plug the wall wart directly into European mains (check the label first!!)

Edit: I stand corrected. I guess it is a (rare) a/c-to-a/c wall wart.

(see edited post above, with quote from the Sol FAQ). I posted that edit about 5s after @skem posted above.

    Cheers.

Schiit worked with Conrad Hoffman to design the Sol, and he wanted a DC motor but there was a problem with noise and availability.
They started work on this back in 2013 finally in production good things take time.

@schiit : why not just a different size pulley?

The motor is not rated for 50Hz.

Read all of above and thanks @Syzygy . Now fully understood.
@schiit Do we know roughly when 50Hz motor would be available for other countries by any chance?

So sounds like we currently can't upgrade SOL power supply. When I listened to the SOL on heaphones via Ragnarok 2 I could not detect any TT noise. But it was a fairly loud environment. When I heard the SOL in the Schiit two channel room it sounded excellent.

Not yet, I'm afraid. We need to qualify the motors. Then wait. The lead time is quite long.

    Guessing? At least 3 months.

Would Pro-Ject Speed Box S help remedy using it 230v countries? If it does, then it can help using the SOL to other countries and it also help changing speed between 33 and 45rpm by pushing a button instead of putting the belt onto different sized pulley which will be much more convenient?
