Yggdrasil Refined - New Schiit Yggdrasil Analog 2 (Yggdrasil A2) Sound Impressions

I call BS. At this level of DAC you're into rapidly diminishing returns - the differences are really pretty small, and it's more about tradeoffs/preferences than which is most besterest.

 

Let the guy respond before jumping down his throat FFS. He's had experience with some TOTL dacs, his opinion and comparisons certainly can be valuable.

 

Woah. Someone said something was BETTER than schiit? Say it ain't so. I better defend their honor ASAP by
a) making a grandiose statement that really speaks more to my own insecurity and inexperience with gear that I own and have not owned

b) does not promote discussion, education, or benefit anyone on their personal audio journey

c) earn the self-adulation I so desperately crave from my peers who also LOVE schiit

While I agree I would love to hear his opinion, that post is kind of useless. No specific details about what/how specifically it is “better”, and the system and circumstances used/auditioned, etc.

 

Agreed. However, a simple "can you expand on that" would have sufficed.

It was more a general statement about TOTL gear, just happens this thread is about Yggdrasil. The only item I still own from Schiit is the humble SYS. I sold my Yggdrasil because I found the Pavane was slightly better in some areas, slightly worse in others... i.e. tradeoffs. This particular set of tradeoffs suited my tastes better, and I've posted at length comparing the two (not to mention the DAVE which I've heard and the Aqua DACs which I had on extended loan).

@nc42acc Welcome to SBAF. Please expand on your short post about the Terminator and compare against the Yggdrasil, Gustard X20, etc, to help us on our personal audio journeys.

Agreed that a blanket "Terminator better than Yggdrasil" statement sucks and should have come with qualifications, but it kinda bites that some hackles were raised over it. +1 this:

 

Compared against the following. Directstream with and without Bridge II, BDA-3, Holo Spring 3, T&A DAC8, Gungnir multibit, Topping DX7s, Gustard X20 and a few others not worth mentioning. Used a Singxer at times to feed the units with i2S inputs as a comparison. The Terminator bests all in my system and not by a small margin. Using same Aluminata interconnects on two DACs I can switch between zones linked.

System: PS Audio P15, SGC SonicTransporter i7, Microrendu & SOtM sms-200, Roon, Curious Cable regen link, ARC REF5SE, 2 - Nord 1200as as mono amps, Von Schweikert VR5 Anniversary MKII. JPS Aluminata interconnects, JPS SC3 biwire, JPS Kaptovator PC.

 

The Holo Spring and Schiit products are popular here. Can you compare to those more specifically?

Nope, have heard neither; much as I want to try some better DACs the amplifiers (and many would argue headphones) in my setup likely won't benefit much from a source upgrade, haha. Just taking exception to blanket statements because they're all stupid

 

10 days in with signal running 24/7, my YA2 still not up to the fully settled/burned in YA1, but it doesn't sound 'like ass' now. Next update will be at two weeks in..

 

Thanks but i was actually meant to quote @nc42acc. The reason is he talked about so much gear that I just wanted to see a few pics and understand what "bests all in my system" means for him.

 

I been following the DAC & it seems to be generally agreed from several owners that the DAC is on the sharper, V-shaped & thinner side. Though very well extended at both ends, great transients & excellent layering. I would think it would have a very different sound signature from the new Yggdrasil.

 

Oh that makes worlds more sense! I thought I'd have to put "in mid-fi purgatory" in my signature somewhere, unoriginal as that'd have been (haha). Curious to hear nc's thoughts as well, useful as they'd be for someone who's yet to get ears on an Yg.

 

Why post noise in this forum then? Please stop unless you are able to add meaningful content. Seriously, more reading and less writing will benefit everyone greatly.

Unless you have first hand experience with the Terminator in your system how can you comment on this V shaped tonality? This is totally contrary to what I am hearing. The Terminator is probably the best balanced DAC I have heard.
