No, mine gets hot all over. Hot enough it is uncomfortable to touch for longer than 5 sec or so.

Rubber melts at 260 degrees or higher, and if the case gets that hot, there's a problem for sure.

I think it deserves an email to Schiit...

What tube are you using? Are you using the internal DAC? Did you rub yours down in snake oil before you used it like I did?

Stock Russian tube. Amp only, no module.

I didn't rub the amp in snake oil. Only my body. That's how it's done

I used to own a Lyr 2. I thought it sounded decent until I started comparing it to other stuff. Not really important since the Lyr 3 is a new design. I was really impressed by the Magni 3. I don't need another amp right now in that <$1000 range, so I'm not tempted by the Lyr 3 despite it's alleged awesomeness. But I can't shake how the potential for an Asgard 3 might change things given what was done with the Magni 3 and Lyr 3. If Jason decides to pursue that project and still keep it class A, I think I might be tempted to buy one. This is all pure speculation on a non-existent product, but I'll bet someone else is curious about how a future Asgard could shake things up.

A Lyr 2 -> Lyr 3 comparison (if anyone has both and the time) would also be appreciated. Not for me, but if the upgrade is significant, it would make a nice gift for my Dad who is running a Lyr 2 + HE-500 rig I had previously got for him. The vast majority of his listening is classical music, so impressions of violins, and orchestral voices through this amp would be useful.

While not likely to happen anytime soon, I should think that a spider chart comparing the following would be useful:

    1. Lyr 3
    2. mcth + LPS
    3. ZDT Jr
    4. magni 3

Lyr 2 has bassier emphasis, warmer tone, but sounds dead and boring to me. I never liked the Lyr 1. The Lyr 2 was a slight improvement over the Lyr 1, but it was still on the corpse side of things. The thing about classical recordings is the gobs contrasts of volume levels - likely a result of simplified recording chains as much as the genre. There are a lot of small quick changes in volume with violins, cellos, voices, that just aren't reproduced with the Lyr 2. To me, these carry forth the essence of emotional involvement with music. The Lyr 3 fixes this. However, I am not sure if much of these improvements would translate for the HE-500.

Lyr 3 is better than Magni 3 in every way. Better macrodynamics, significantly better microdynamics, less upfront headstage, slightly more resolving. However good the Magni 3 is for its price, and however improvement it over the Magni 2, the Lyr 3 is simply much better. (FYI, the Magni 2 headstage is actually less upfront than Magni 3).

I had a chance to compare to Mjolnir 2 directly. As @Hands said, the Mjolnir 2 still has that bit of sharp prickly treble grain coloration of the Mjolnir 1, just a hint sometimes. The Mjolnir 2 is like a super Lyr 2 with better microdynamics and resolution. The Lyr 3 is more even and cohesive tonally, has maybe just a tad better microdynamics and resolution, and superior clarity. The Mjolnir 2 always seems to have a haze. Where the Mjolnir 2 might win is that it does have more slam, but this may very well be because of its bass and lower mid emphasis. It was close, but overall, I felt the Lyr 3 was the better amp. I even told Jason this.

Ok, so I think I dismissed the new production Tung Sol tube way too quick. It has better attack, details, bass quantity and quality and overall presence than my Sylvania chrome dome and RCA grey glass 6sn7s. (The RCAs sound like rolled off mush.) The amp just sounds so right with the TS tube and my Eikons. Special synergy worthy.

I'll give the Russian nos tube a shot and let you know. Right now, my baseline is going to be the new TS.

Edited because I misread Skyline's post.

I suspect the company making the new production Tung Sol might have gotten their shit together over time. This is based on new production 6SL7 and 6SN7 that I've been hearing in Craig's amps. I too have gone back to the new production TS 6SN7 over some vintage 6SN7s with certain headphones. They hold their own.

I'm truly impressed. Every other new prod tube I've tried in the Crack, Elise or IHA-1 were just shit. This one is not shit.

The Eikons don't have HD800 level of treble (for me that's a good thing), and I would guess this tube might be a bit too bright for those or most Beyers in the Lyr 3. It will probably bring out super special things on the HD650 though. I need to get my HD650s on this rig, it might be epic.

Concerning the warming-up of the Multibit DACs:

As far as I understand it's not about temperature but about "electronic equilibrium" in the circuitry. So towels won't help, correct me if I'm wrong.

Mike Moffat stated somewhere this takes about 12 hours.

Can't find the source right now, but I remember I researched this before getting my Gungnir Multibit.
