Suprisingly cool. Less hot than Jot for sure.

    Email back from Schiit support:

It doesn't get hot enough to burn you, but you can't rest your hand on it for more than 5 Seconds without it becoming very uncomfortable. It definitely runs hotter than my Jotunheim.

I'm using a metal hard drive tray to elevate it and get more airflow under it, and this seems to help, but only a little. It is still the hottest amp I've ever owned. @Skyline - Yours does not have a dac in it, where mine does. This might impact thermals.

Aside - MCTH is burning in at my desk. Initial impression: Lyr 3 has better bass impact and extension (by a lot), overall is more detailed, and cleaner in the midrange in comparison to the MCTH. MCTH sounds smoother, a touch laid back. Stock tube really needs to be burned in from what I understand, so these impressions will undoubtedly change. They both sound very good.

I thought I saw a pic somewhere of a curve tracer at Schiit. I assume they take data on all the curves and use a least squares method to see which ones match within an acceptable tolerance. The ones that don't match as well could be used in parallel for something else. (Freya?)

Sure, you have the DAC module and I don't. We're also using different tubes. Differences just sounded a little extreme is all.

Anyway, like I said before. If mine were broken, I'd refuse to get it fixed. The sound is too good to mess with. :p

In his latest chapter, Jason said Jot pulls 16 watts and Lyr 3 25 watts.
Why is it cooler than the Jot? The secondary module?

I know! I'm in the same boat. I'm a bit concerned about the heat, although I think I'll just let it be because it sounds so damn good.

Variance in operating temperature will be dramatically affected by room temperature, ventilation, whether or not the product is sitting on top of another one, whether or not a card is installed, and, most of all, subjective perception. What I consider "warm," most people will think is painful. Best to use a FLIR or IR thermometer when in doubt.

Lyr will run 15-20 degrees C above ambient, depending on how the air is moving, humidity, etc. With a card, maybe 2-5 degrees C more. All bets are off if it's sitting on top of an already warm surface (hot plate, different component, computer, etc.)

Yes. Huge step up. Different sound though - but should shake it up.

I doubt people who actually sell the tubes would charge $2 for work that would be a pain in the ass.

Thanks for replying Jason. It's not sitting on anything, just a wooden desk. It has about 2" of clearance on each side (L & R) and is raised about 3/4" up. There are no other heat sources near it.

I don't think it is an issue now. It was slightly alarming at first though. Thanks again! |\/|

$500 for an amp and it's not even compatible with my hot plate?

And the temperature measurements show that it's only 9 bit resolution on the fahrenheit scale.

A solid upward move. It will blow away the A2, especially in terms of clarity.

Seems excessive. What part of your body are you touching it with?
