I think one can make a case about reducing the size and introducing some features to a digital interconnection. There are standardization and compatibility concerns which opens things to competition and balances, which Apple seems to want to side step in order to monopolize a market (arguably, their own market) to a certain extent.

However, I just don't see how one can make a case regarding the headphone jack. It's harder to try to monopolize the headphone market for many reasons. Even if it's a monopoly for their own iPhone market. It's stupid. Brand loyalty, options, and high performance is very different with headphones vs usb cables and such. Someone up the chain of command proly didn't do it's homework me thinks.

This has nothing to do with "evolving the headphone" and stuff. You can do similar stuff with a simple USB interconnect. Again. This IMO was really stupid.

Now it's seems they are scrambling with this $9 jack which will come with it's own short comings.

Will see how things go. Time will say.

Like the floppy drive and DVD drive peripherals Apple sold when they removed them from their computers, the headset adaptor will most likely be gone by 2018. Depending on battery life improvements on wireless earbuds, the masses will have gravitated towards either wireless or lightning headphones. I think wireless is more likely, since there isn't already a lightning port on Macbooks.

Wireless headphones need to evolve to the point that they offer similar or better performance relative to wired headphones.

Unlike monitors that can have their power supply and source outside the phones, wireless headphones need a small (hopefully integrated) solution. There will be trade offs, which may tilt some folks one way or another. Potentially loosing a large market segment IMO. And a market segment they currently have a stake.

I agree that wireless solution isn't on par with wired. From Bluetooth bandwith to transducer. The best wireless I've ever heard (Bose QC25) sounds even worse than good wired phones around similar price bracket.

However, I believe that we will see increasing growth of wireless. The reason is the market target. Apple is aiming for its largest market, which is young generation who frequently use various social media (FB, Twitter, Snapchat, Instagram, etc). Convenience (wireless), brand power (Beats, Bose, Apple), price (hence $9 3.5mm adapter, the cheapest accessory Apple has ever sell), cool aspect (AirPods, Google Glass/HTC Vive crappy earbuds) are more interesting than sound quality. My roommate didn't know Sennheiser until I got HD800.

Personally, I don't 100% agree with their decision to remove 3.5mm jack. OTOH, I understand that Apple is following the trend & mass. I can't imagine Apple explaining about THD, IMD, frequency response, impedance, phase, etc etc during keynote (Apple talked about 6-elemens lens, bokeh, 1.8 aperture, low light, Megapixel; in contrast, none about audio except "wireless" during the last keynote). Maybe in the next few years (when they reached camera tech slowdown) we will get worthy attention for audiophile audio quality (so they have something to sell).

LG V10 (and the new V20) tried to achieve better audio by implementing ESS Sabre chips (treble glare, but better than other phones chips anyway). They didn't get much media attention nor sell big. The market speaks for itself.

f**k you apple, at least you could use a USB 3.1, which even your f'ing Macbook is using, but no, let's be a jerk as always and use our silly and worse proprietary connector. Congratz!!!

Actually, the more I think about it, the less I think this no-headphone-jack deal is a problem. Specially considering the accessories cover this issue.

As a portable, in which convenience is a top priority. One may still be able add all kinds of crazy amps and DACs to a phone and indeed hi-fi specialize the solution. But not all want to do this.

It seems to me that having a single port or the least amount of ports as possible has it's benefits.

Again. I'm aware I have been going back and forth about the "issue". The more I think about it, the more I'm convinced this is not an issue.

The only issue I see is that you can't charge and listen with headphones at the same time...

Let's get back to the future...

It is ironic that the iPhone is the primary reason that this type solution was abandoned and is now the primary reason for its pending resurgence.

Nokia did this too. After a while they brought back the audio jack input because their proprietary connectors, both the 2.5mm and the strange dongle thingy were annoying and did not offer enough advantages.

Then Nokia launched the Nokia 5800 music phone and it sold pretty well.

    Apple will feel a backlash...

Also coming with the IP7 is iOS10. Now my 6S+ on 10 has noise when streaming over a DF Red or E5.

I upgraded yesterday to iOS10 on my 6s and haven't found any noise when using my GOV2+. I found it neat that iOS10 it actually shows the device that you are playing through, it shows (on foobar and apple music) now playing on Geek Out V2+ 1.5.

    The teardown is out!

EDIT: From teardown photos, battery sizes between 6s & 7 are similar. Apple made taptic engine on 7 is bigger than 6s, which wouldn't be possible without removing 3.5mm. The reason of bigger taptic engine? Dunno.

As solid state home button, it may contributes to waterproofing. Nevertheless, 6s could have solid state home button as 6s has taptic engine.

My Xperia Z3+ says hi... \/

Waterproofing can be done without flaps. It just takes additional engineering effort.

As an aside, that looks like an awfully big component to add in order to replace a physical button. I really do wonder how it will feel in normal use.

Reports say it feels strange on iPhone. However, it feels really great on MacBooks.

Yep. Makes buying a 2 year old laptop for over 1k$ a much less painful decision. And besides, we don't know if the next Macbooks will have headphone jacks at all......

I don't think they will. They make EarPods, the most populous, if not popular, cheap headphones in the world. They own Beats, the most popular upscale headphones in the world.

Audiophiles already weren't using the built in jack.

Apple is a lot more influential than Nokia. I think the jack is gone for good in this space.
