My brother in law is a violist for a reasonably prestigious organization, and he only listens to music over laptop speakers and Apple EarPods. I literally can't even.
No one that has ever played or heard a real instrument has ever commented on what does and does not sound "right" given their experience and expertise. Not once.
@dubharmonic@drgumbybrain@Cspirou Kind of knew I was looking for a needle in a haystack, but figured there was a better needle to haystack ratio! It's true, though; I can only think of one musician friend who is into headphones.
As someone who didn't grow up playing an instrument and who learned to love them through recorded rather than live performances, I always wondered whether a musician thought one headphone captures (or maybe reproduces?) the heart of their instrument more than another. I've always been struck at how beautiful Rostropovich's Brahms Cello Sonatas sound from either a HD600 or a HD650...
...but Rostropovich also sounds different on either headphone. I owned a HD600 first so it seems... "truer" to me, but I think that is only priority of ownership. It didn't seem crazy to think there was a violinist or cellist (or for that matter, any musician) here who could say why they prefer their instrument on one headphone over another (or any, for that matter), but then again, I'm not a musician!
As a woodwind musician, listening is a much different experience than playing. Still throws me off after 20 years, even when I'm at a live performance. The player's sinus cavity is part of the instrument, turns out.
Honestly don't know if me being a cello player gives me better insight. The way I play the cello sounds totally different from from the pros I've heard and it's even different from whoever claimed first chair in my orchestra. The way you hold it and bow all has an effect. Only way I could compare is if I heard Rostropovich live and through the HD 600
