Would the headphones used help with the tonality here?

My Big PeePee did have impressions with OG BF2.

For me, the OG BF2 is the OG motherfucker for these reasons:

    • Darker Tone in the highs with nice bass response that is more of the phat hitting side (so a chick with a nice ass, not the boney ones).
    • Layering is more complexed (music sounds and other items just have more layers to them than Big PeePee with built-in ESS card).
      • Makes the Mids pretty layered with depth.
    • Not too upfront sound.
    • Details are there but you have to search for it since OG BF2 will not shove it in your face.
I am happy with the ESS card of Big PeePee, but adding the OG BF2 as the DAC to Big PeePee is a few levels of improvement with no minuses.

So a buddy of mine is evil and loaned me his Big Pee Pee (naked, no ESS) specifically to play with Atrium Open. And oh my word. He's lucky he has my MJ3 hostage to try out, or he might not get this back. Don't get me wrong, I liked Atrium on MJ3 decently, but the real magic on that amp is with my 650K. The more I listened, MJ3 has something off in the highs for me with Atrium, especially with cymbals but to a lesser extent bells. Big Pee Pee eliminated that issue entirely without having to f**k around with mesh and pads (I use radial mesh, autuer pads 95% of the time), or roll a billion dacs to dial the sound in. Bifrost 2 OG is tits, and Yggdrasil GS is also pretty great. I don't have the cinemag converter (yet, waiting on a parts box to build one for the shits), but the jensen does fine. I did pop the 650s on just because why not, and they're good. But lacks that extra "wow" MJ3 gave to them.

As others have noted, the head stage is decidedly smaller. That's not a deal breaker for me since I sometimes like a closer, more intimate sounding stage. Big Pee Pee still does a good job capturing the really tactile nature of sonic textures Atrium excels at despite instruments being more compressed than MJ3 and Studio B. The lows don't extend quite as low as the other two amps, but again not enough to be a problem for me. For 500 bucks I wish this had existed back in 2016 when I started with headphone insanity. I'd have saved a lot of money and dead ends. Right now, it feels like our cup runeth over in the solid state world. Like damn. I'd get one if I thought it would get enough play time, but I don't have room for -three- solid state amps lol.

You listening in Push Pull or SE? That switch has a noticeable effect on highs

Not to get too off topic, but what differences in the highs are you noticing between Push Pull and SE on the MJ3. I’ve pretty much settled on leaving it in Push Pull all the time because it sounds better on my planars, while not sounding at all inferior to SE on my dynamics.

The highs seem more a hair more spitty to me on SE than PP. Anyone I've demo'd the amp to also prefers it and I use it full time.

I'm listening on PP with MJ3. I like the bit of density it seems to give.

Last listening notes before Big Pee Pee has to go home. I finally got around to making a cinemag 15/15 box and I prefer it over the jensen. It won't rock your world if you already have jensen pi/po-xr2 already (it's that close) which is what I did my initial impression with. But you get some more plankton, a super slight tone shift darker. Not actually dark (except with Bifrost 2 OG), just going more neutral than bright. Maybe a slight density increase, but that just might be my brain hallucinating it with the extra plankton. Everything else from above stands, though the differences from the cinemags give the 650s a little bit more engagement with Big Pee Pee, and make Atrium just that much more awesome. Totally worth building and easy with some basic soldering skills even if you can't read electrical schematics (I'm kinda dumb) thanks to some really high res pictures here on sbaf.

Do y’all giggle every time you type out Big Pee Pee? It’s kinda cringe.

Yes absolutely. Try reading our banner sometime and you'll get the idea. Also, lurk more.

P.S. We are absolutely serious about good sound. We don't take ourselves seriously.

Trying listening to an audiophile podcast. I'll take pee pee and white caulk / black caulk jokes over any audiophile podcast -or- OFRAS Vette owners bitching about the Z51 package being too stiff (it's like get a Mercedes then).

It's called docking. For the uninformed, look it up on urbandictionary or a video search at your own risk. No I'm not going to link it for you.

Since someone asked earlier in the thread, I felt the internal ESS card was pretty substantially more betterer than Modius E using single ended connection. I can't comment on using balanced or balanced convertor with it.

Treble on the internal card was clearer, and had no etch or ugliness I could detect. More plankton as well.

Modius E sounded more forward, not as good at layering, and had a bit of a bite up top I didn't like. I couldn't really listen to it much as I found it off-putting.

I compared both using USB. I tried AES to Modius E from Red, and while it cleaned things up a bit, I still felt it was too forward and a bit grating. Something harsh about it.

TLDR: Get the Pietus with the ESS card and be happy.

Hey, thanks for this revelation! Been around since early Changster days but would never have guessed the vibe… how could I have missed it?

Will go back to lurking. Thanks boss!
