When kicking the tire isn't just kicking the tire :)
On a similar note, I never thought I would get to make jewelry with a hammer finish until I randomly made a hammer finished ring on a vacation one day.
@fp627, Jeweller? Was once a hobby. Fairly basic stuff and repairs but I had quite a well-equipped bench and it was fun. Hammer finish: like old pewter. Can be nice :)
Used to know a silversmith. What he did with a hammer used to make me cringe. But hey, it always came out perfect, of course.
I am not a jeweler but have always had interest in engraving (both large objects like wood pieces and finer objects like jewelry / watches / guns / knives) and different artistic metal finishes such as inlays, hammering, etc. When I first started learning about engraving + art of the above, I too was amazed at how much hammers were utilized.
Wow! I'm amazed by engraving! Made a wedding ring that needed v shapes cut into the surface. Got a pro engraver friend to do it for me. That was amazing enough, but when I told him, no, the guy was getting married that weekend and I did not have time to get it hallmarked, I was amazed to see him "write" '18 ct' on the inside as if he was holding a pencil. Respect to your skills: that is very difficult stuff to master
Should clarify - I don't actually engrave yet but it's a very long running interest that will probably be my next hobby I pick up when things go back to normal. I've done some very very amateur level stuff but I can't even do flowers reliably right now and don't have my own tools yet, etc.
Oh, ok... all the best with that: enjoy! I guy I saw on youtube said to practice drawing: "If you can't draw it, you can't cut it." Makes sense. My lack of drawing skill limited my jewellery design to basic shapes.
The trouble with engraving is that when you slip, the damage tends to be terminal. eek.
