I've always used suboptimal, but I guess that is not pessimal enough (now also noting my spell checker does not even know the latter word, which I guess makes it suboptimal but not really pessimal)
HAH! It's always fun to come across random etymological odds and ends and see how it might tie in to the modern vernacular, as in the case of "optimist" and "pessimist". Language is always evolving so I've lost that stick up my arse about kids' slang and just wonder at the PACE of change nowadays.
@Thad E Ginathom likewise honestly, but some friends you can just reconnect with and pick up as if no time at all has passed. I fully believe optimist is one such pal.
