Very best wishes to those there, evacuated or not. I guess the only thing worse than being battened down, wondering if your house will survive, is being evacuated and not even knowing.
It's distressing to see another massive hurricane hit the region (something like 5 of the 10 costliest hurricanes have been in the past 4 years), and all but Andrew have been since 2004, if wikipedia is to be trusted.
I was living in NOLA when Katrina hit. Evacuated the day before landfall to GF's family in MS gulf coast - too many people and pets to evacuate from there, so we all hunkered down. We knew we'd be beyond the storm surge. But the area near us was destroyed. In the 10 days after landfall I managed to receive one call, a friend who notified my family I was ok.
@Thad E Ginathom - the not knowing is hard; we couldn't get back into NOLA for 2 1/2 months (National Guard etc. wouldn't let anyone in). I was very lucky, my place was a few blocks from the flooding, so only minor damage. So many lost everything. I hope people down there get through Ida without too much suffering.
