He’ll want an external DAC with that Oppo if he’s using it for music… It is a much more flexible device, though it should be noted that its Netflix app is out of date (no frame rate matching, etc.) and the Oppo/Tidal integration is broken.

Oppo isn’t bad but if they explicitly don’t need the extra features then it’s a total waste.

I have an Oppo 105 and 205. Is it the final word in musical fidelity? No, but it's really not bad. Like @Merrick said, it's total overkill if you have no intention of using the video features. For strictly audio, your friend would get better value elsewhere.

I got to listen to it today and it wasn't utter garbage... but woolly bass, flat microdynamically and some sabre glare. I wouldn't probably personally like it in the long run. And I don't think it's a good match for my friends Stax setup (SR-009 + SRM-T8000).

It’s definitely a bad match for the SR-009. Bright headphones and Sabre glare don’t make good bedfellows.
