@Jinxy245 funny, I think that's what the "pop" I heard translates to in electronics speak

what component did you mess up? Schiit products have fuses so shouldn’t have burned out any capacitors

@Cspirou Modi MB2, pretty sure the pop and smoke came from the wallwart. Did a visual inspection of the board and nothing looks amiss, no smoke smell.

They were with a friend for a few weeks now, just got em. I had it in my mind that he got to demo stuff and it just worked. Didn't notice the adapters were labelled 120V

That’s not a capacitor than but the transformer that got burned out

As long as you don’t need 120V wall-wart though you are likely fine

Ahh gotcha, pardon the mistake. Nice, I was pretty sure that wallwarts were designed to take the hit for idiocy like I exercised, but I'm ignorant enough about components to need reassurance. Appreciate it!

If it was an AC/DC wall-wart it would have had a smoothing capacitor and rectifier bridge, so it could have been possible. Schiit devices are AC/AC though which is just a step down in voltage and all the rectification is done on the device

I'm guessing you burned through some of the transformer windings in the wallwart.

Since I'm also in 220V zone, I've bought multiple 16V 1A in 220V transformers for Schiit gears, and I have to check twice every time I swap gears... The price is fair in China, maybe you can get some from AliExpress?

Oh man. Big ouch. If it's not from a same voltage country, always check what was sent your way. Keen to know what you think of it once you've got a replacement transformer.

I try to label cables and plugs at the ends just so there's no confusion. (I have both 120 and 220 gear...an argument can be made for switchers)

@joch Good idea! I think I'll label my non-compatible gear from now on. I already label my bricks with what they are for but also have some imported goods that are wrong (single) voltage.

My brain's been running slower than usual lately so yeah, large labels really ought help witth stuff like this. It's all 220V here so it'll more be a matter of staring at stuff and needing to figure out what's worth getting a SDT for. Less worried about the DAC itself now but still laughing at me being dumb.

Since 2017, I’ve set up all of my labs and MDF rooms as 208/ 240v only in the US. Since then, I’ve ran into ZERO devices that can’t handle it. Thought I would have ran into more 120v only gear - but none. (Edit: but at home, some stuff is 120v only.)

I understand why Schiit went with these wall warts and it is wholly on me for forgetting to check cuz I've just gotten used to NOT receiving stuff that's 120V (e.g. Friend-priced used SW51s in the past before I dunked money into IEMs), but yeah it was kinda hard to turn these down haha. Could be nostalgia but I do miss the megacomboburrito salad sound, though ofc I don't expect this to be 1:1 the OG Bifrost MB.

The europlug being totally different has kept me from mixing up voltages. Do the Philippines use the US plug?

@Cspirou We use USA, EU, and UK plugs interchangeably. Ungrounded USA is most common I think, yes, but a lot of appliances come with UK plugs so we end up having to use adapters... lots of them. It's just a mess of weird standards depending on where you are here.

I forgot I had this lying around since I just had the Magni 3+ gathering dust. This ought be same spec as works for the Modi MB2, I believe? I'll leave it be until I get confirmation lmao.

@Lyander Yes! That will work. Schiit's replacement power bricks only come in two options now. 14-16VAC works for all current Modis. The only other option is the dual voltage brick for the Vali 2s.

Right, that's what I was thinking. I'm gonna be quadruply sure and email schiit about it though. The specs align and the wallwart is rated for 3x the amperage so it should theoretically be super safe. I know that should work but I'm fully in cover my ass mode haha.

definitely hide the 110v stuff unless absolutely sure. you can accidentally plug 220v into 110v without much issue. not so much the other way

At the moment the only 110V gear I have are the AC-AC Schiit wall warts (unless I'm properly mistaken the Modi MB 2 and Magni don't really have anything to do with voltage conversion themselves?)
