I'm using modded HE6SE V1 and Audeze LCD 2.2 pre-fazor recently, I was trying to fix the "sound in the void" sounding problem of Hifiman, and thinking about LCD 2.2 sounded really thick and whole, which I liked, but could be too much?
Didn't realize what I want is their child, and that's this pair of LCD 4, to me it's just like HE6SE X LCD 2.2, and even with improvement based on that
2 problems I found during 1 hour of listening: Occasional weak vocal spot and cymbals(?) can be a bit too splashy. But these are fine, comparing to the shock it gave me
Back with more impression:
I used not to be able to tell things like texture (especially bass texture) and clarity (and clear headphones tend to be bright and lean in many cases).
Well, LCD-4 told me something about bass texture and "clarity with warmth", and brought quite some new details and feelings to songs I'm familiar with. I'm feeling great.
Oh~ I used it on HD800 and THX00, hah! I think my ears are burnt in now, I'm 90% OK, but yes, let me try to remember where I left my favorite static wrap (sorry I don't know the proper name of it)... It's soft and airy, not too effective, but it makes sound a little sweet
In my big, long audition of as many TOTL HPs as I could get my hands on, LCD-4 was one that really stood out. I don't know if I heard a unicorn pair or it was the amp at the dealer (a McIntosh MHA150, I think), but it brought the bass like no other I've heard. Unfortunately, this was a beat-up demo pair, so I tracked down a much nicer example on the used market.
They have that excellent clarity you mentioned, despite being darker toned, but not quite the monster bass I remembered from the other pair. I still like them considerably, but sometimes think about going back to that shop.... And, again, cd be the amp.
Oh, I love the bass of my unit! And again, it's like HE6SE mixed with LCD2.2, I think it's got 85% sub bass of HE6SE, and 65% of the upper bass warmth? thickness? of LCD2.2 (like I knew anything). But I do feel that there's a little boost somewhere just higher frequency than the extreme low bass, so it worked really well on prog songs I've been listening to, some drums and electrical bass really pounded at my ears.
And I forgot to mention that I'm using a half-broken Ragnarok V1, just amazing, currently I won't ask for anything more. Other amps of mine are broken (Erzetich Deimos, but I really want to try LCD 4 on it), haven't arrived, or sounded edgy (Magni Piety)... Sigh.
Right... The weight is really noticeable... And to make things worse, the previous own swapped the headband to the one on LCD2, I have pain area on top of my head after 1 hour of use.
I'd say that the "suspension headband"? That both Hifiman and Audeze currently using are fine, and the latest ZMF and Meze (IIRC) headbands look even better.
But hey, guess who's been struggling with this on-head weight problem too? Apple.
I thought the weight would bother me, but it's been basically fine. I wear them for at most an hour to an hour and a half at a time, as I just listen in short sessions to pretty much all HPs. So, I can see them getting uncomfortable over longer periods. But I've not felt any discomfort for myself.
One thing I find myself is that I'm OK with heavy headphones, IF the headband is alright (not old Audeze ones ugh). I guess it's just me wearing headphones a lot and play VR games (mostly Beat Saber) sometimes, and I think these two actions helps with each other
