I think there are at least two HD580 versions. I think the latest HD580 used the same drivers as the old HD600, but the HD600 drivers have since been revised.

Don't quote this as a source, but the late version HD580 were the same as the first HD600 from my understanding. Cheers!

Getting a pair of hd580s can be a gamble. Better make sure it's in great condition, otherwise you'll be spending money on replacing parts. Despite that, you'll eventually have to replace the springs because they will oxidize and wear out. The HD580 that I had was similar sounding to the hd600, if not the same.

@thegunner100 Good to know. I absolutely hate to gamble with audio equipment, however, don't have really much options here.

The HD 580 Jubilee was the HD 600. The drivers were the same but the HD 580 regular was cost reduced. Any pair in good condition that doesn't require you to replace the pads, cable, headband, or cable connection springs will be close enough in cost to an HD 600 to where you're better off just getting an HD 600.

@Psalmanazar That's what I was thinking about too, but didn't how much could it be. Anybody knows how similar HD600 is to HD598, I can't find any 600s to check here, but didn't like 598 at all.

They're not very similar. The HD 598 is decent out of an amp, bleh out of a laptop or phone that can't get over the bass impedance hump.

Oh, and getting the hd600 grills to replace the stock hd580 grill will get you a bit closer to the hd600. But that'll cost you at least $50.

@Psalmanazar I didn't listen to them out of an amp, but it wasn't the bass that was problematic, the overal sound was kinda... too polished/smooth. But I'd def. have to check them with an amp, they might sound totally different.

HD580s can be very affordable. Used in good condition a 100 Euros can be found. HD600 a bit more. Thing is, did the owner care about the headphone?
