Thanks for the list. I was worried for a moment that I didn't recognize any of the top 30 albums, but then realized I've got 30 new albums to explore during the break.

PS. I do recognize a few bands from the honorable mentions, so we're still good :p

There’s a story behind these and the interesting designers behind them. Will elaborate on that, along with some impressions of these crazy mofos.

Super nuanced along the lines of the original SR Omegas, yet more romantic at the same time??

How do these compare to the Big Stax Three?
    Stay tuned! Or something!

@MuppetFace Oh come on, RTJ3 was a 2016 release. Which pissed me off, because I was supposed to include it on my list of 2017, but at least made for a nice Christmas morning.

Anyway, hey, I got official permission to leech off my fiancee's thread to dump my own top 101 because i like to go one step beyond list, or a list and a dump of things worthy enough for me to note down. It's pretty much the only long-term project I managed to do in 2017. Also it's a proof that me and Romy have actually differing tastes, once we trim off the top.

It's gonna sound kind weird, but I didn't listen to a lot of music at all before... maybe middle of last year? Went through a long depressive slump and it always seemed so distracting and just not good to listen to. Then I started being badgered with the "try music you might like it" attitude and got gently introduced to a lot of stuff. Dub techno turned out to be the gateway drug, since ambient music like 80% of my tiny library.

I think at the end of 2017, I can say I do, in fact, like music now

Give the new Steve Wilson album a listen. He is more Pop on that album but the songwriting and Proggy compositions are still present. It is a moody album but when you get a feel for his stories the songs get better with each listen.

I am happy you mention Sharon Jones. She was one of the last of a generation...

    How it do, dearest readers?
Another year, another hastily done post looking back on things, post-2017.

This year was positively insane when it came to new music; practically every artist I listen to released something or other. Total information overload. I mean damn, I only just recently discovered Profanatica released a new album earlier this year. Profanatica. One of my favorite stupid black metal bands ever.

Same with Machine Girl who is decidedly not metal of any sort but is nevertheless fond of corpsepaint.

It was a strange year: a lot of negative shit healthwise, a lot of family dram. And yet, 2017 was a year in which I found true love.

    Other things of note:

    1. Chartreux cats. I love this breed, and this year I welcomed a new member into the family: Nadine aka “Dweeny.” She’s basically an IRL Pusheen. Less a cat in appearance and more of a potato creature. Or perhaps some kind of...wooly sheep shaped like a seal. It’s been a year now since Maxx passed away, and now I’m mostly just left with fond memories instead of sadness. Dweeny is so completely different from her predecessor, and I feel fortunate enough to be able to live with her and discover her quirks. Of which there are many.

    C1A0A7EA-9627-4CD2-8CCF-FAF0EC3244DF.jpeg

    2. On the videogame front, nothing this year has come close to touching the brilliance of Hollow Knight for me. I’m a fan of “Metroidvania” and “Souls-like” games in general, but HK takes those familiar core mechanics and refines them to new heights. It’s just such a joy to place. So detailed and lovingly crafted. Nintendo Switch fans: definitely check this game out when it comes to your system of choice next year.

    87E734BA-DB75-46DF-85A0-991C19E49FEA.png

I still need to finish Nier Automata and the new Prey at some point.

    3. My interests tend to come and go in cycles. 2017 was very much a year of unobtanium car obsession for me. In particular, the new Ferrari 812 SuperFast has a certain refined subtlety in styling (for a Ferrari) that I’m seriously into. There are the only cars I love in yellow paint for whatever reason, and a golden hued SuperFast in is just supercar perfection.

The new McLaren 720 S is pretty much on the opposite side of the spectrum as far as subtlety goes, though it’s not quite a Centinario or Veneno or anything. I love the open headlamps. The sinewy look reminds me of read end of the newer Ford GT (tho I still prefer the 2006 GT looks-wise...). I’d personally take McLaren as a brand over Ferrari, if only because people seem to get their jimmies rustled by the prancing horse—enough to spit at you or ready their keys—but McLaren gets thumbs ups and is decidedly more hip hop these days. How serious I’m being right now is anyone’s guess.

    B173E243-503B-47AF-B795-E37FC031A5DD.jpeg

Looks-wise the Bugatti Chiron and Porsche 918 are still untouchable as far as I’m concerned. Sinews are alright as details, but the upcoming hypercar titans like the the Valkyrie and Project One are so aggressively divisive in this sense. The Project One looks like an ocean dwelling alien (Mother Kos?) while the Valkyrie reminds me of those “sculptures” of skinned horses at the Natural Science museum: nothing but sinew. Negative space is intriguing, sure, but....

Why did Audi ruin the looks of the R8? Meanwhile Lexus hits it out of the park with the LC 500 Sport+. Then again I’m a massive fan of the perversely underrated LFA supercar. Then again the new Aston Vantage is looking mighty fine in electric limeaid.

    4. AUDIO.

Letting go of my turntables due to medical bills was a low point for me. Now that I’m in the market again, I’m considering the Merrill R.E.A.L. deck or even possibly the Well Tempered Royale 400. What can I say? I’m a fan of eccentric designers.

    7980313C-A1B8-4BFA-A267-82186D94B676.jpeg

The Phenomenon e-stats have really impressed me so far. They’ve also reinforced my belief that the best headphones these days are those which have had enthusiasts pouring over them in small batches. Each set touched by human hands and tuned by human ears. Expect a review of these early next year, along with an interview of sorts with the two gentlemen behind this project.

Aside from that, I’ve been pretty impressed by the Focal Clear and Klipsch H3. I also quite like the HD660 S straight from my Walkman. Again, I’ll talk about this stuff more in subsequent posts.

    So yeah.
    Happy New Year?
    Happy New Year!

Here's in the old tradition of spamming @MuppetFace's thread with my own list... ;)

... (in no particular order) my top albums of 2017:

    Alison Moyet - Other
(Big voice of Yazoo fame going... Björk?)

Andreas Schaerer - The Big Wig
(Jazz meets orchestra meets Robert Wyatt)

Charles Lloyd New Quartet - Passin' Thru
(Passionate and infectious, one of my live jazz faves of the year)

    Destroyer - Ken
(Clever and elegant indie pop gems)

Fabiano Do Nascimento - Tempo Dos Mestres
    (Relaxed and atmospheric Brazilian folk-jazz)

Flotation Toy Warning - The Machine That Made Us
    (Melodic and somewhat melancholic art-pop)

Jaimie Branch - Fly Or Die
(Hard to describe this quirky bag of jazz... but it's awesome, give it a try!)

Jeff Finlin - The Guru In The Girl
(Another excellent album by this widely unknown singer / songwriter)

Julia Fordham - The Language of Love
(A mix of inspired and so-so jazz covers of pop songs. The voice and recording quality make it a winner for me)

    Kalo - Live In Nyc
(Raw and energetic. Hands down my favorite blues / rock album of the year)

    Laura Marling - Semper Femina
(The lady is perfection. A folk / pop masterpiece)

    Luka Productions - Fasokan
(Trippy electronic afro-beat. My favorite world music album of the year)

    Matthew Stevens - Preverbal
(Subtle jazz fusion with atmospheric Frisell-ian guitar play)

Mediabanda - Bombas En El Aire
(My recommendation to those who like complex / demanding fusion music. Amazing!)

    Mica Levi - Jackie (OST)
(A late 2016 release, but I just had to include it here. Pretty much the antidote to Mediabanda ;-)

Mihaly Dresch Quartet with Chris Potter - Zea
(Eclectic mix of jazz and Hungarian folk. Another one of my live faves this year)

Morrissey - Low in High School
(Didn't expect to like this... but turned out, I was totally wrong)

The Unthanks - Diversions, Vol. 4 The Songs And Poems Of Molly Drake
(Nick Drake's roots uncovered, thanks to The Unthanks)

Wolfgang Haffner - Kind of Spain
(A remarkably beautiful and well-recorded jazz / folk album)

    Yazz Ahmed - La Saboteuse
(Arabic, jazz, and a little bit of everything. One of the most creative albums I've heard all year)

    Happy New Year everyone! :)

Oh, @MuppetFace... be glad you do not live in a country where loss of cats is routine and horribly regular. Our latest loss: my cat's boyfriend. True, they fell out before Small disappeared, but he had become an affectionate wee thing. Arrived one day, lost, no response to enquiries, just a few months later.

But my animal (see avatar) is just over two. He is still with us despite being swept away in a flood and the loss of the feline friend that brought him home... who was actually around for more years than most.

Wishing you, your cat(s) and your partner a wonderful new year!

Hello folks! Hope you are having a good New Year thus far and that the rest of it will go well.

I’ve got another jaw surgery in the works for around the end of Feb / early March. It’s not an emergency, but thanks to radiation damage some of the previous skin grafts have been destroyed beyond self-healing, exposing the hardware underneath. This makes things more susceptible to infection so... yeah. Better to take care of it now than wait till more of the skin on the side of my face peels off.

Also some other small procedures to repair the corner of my bottom lip will give me a better, more symmetrical (and hopefully more functional) mouth. I’ve actually healed really well aside from the radiation damage and some dental issues.

Not really that into headphones at the moment. I’ve been using e-stats primarily, along with giving the new Focal stuff a try (gonna borrow a friend’s Utopia for a bit to revisit them and possibly update my impressions from about a year ago). Apart from that, I’ve mostly been trying stuff out from smaller companies or individuals who tune by ear.

The main things on my radar at the moment are the MySphere 3.0 and whatever Stax does for their anniversary. Not gonna bother with the newest amp—based on the 353 so it’ll be great I’m sure—but the limited edition L300 has me curious as folks are saying it uses L700 drivers. It’s supposed to be the heaviest pair of Lambdas to date? Let’s hope that extra weight is from extra special sauce.

Oh yeah, and I should check out the Diana if that ever gets released.

Medical bills come first though, and my current insurance is making things quite difficult due to my oncology team who I know and trust being out of network. Not even gonna say what I’ve been having to pay for some of these procedures. <sickface emoji>

Had to let my car and turntables go to help cover the costs, but hey, at least that puts me in the market again for when things are a bit more stable. So I’ll prolly talk about turntables and cars a bit in the coming months.

Also! My fiancé and I will be visiting each other this spring for a bit of a vacation. Really looking forward to that.

@MuppetFace do you have any advice as to where to buy the L300 Limited? Seems like Stax USA is in disarray...

Finally had time to go through some of this. Some of it I know and love (King Krule, Ariel Pink, Chelsea Wolffe, Open Mike Eagle. Some of it is a bit too ambient and / or experimental to me taste. Thanks for Corbin, didn't know him and really like. There is a little typo in the name of the Saicobab album (reason why I couldn't find it at first : D).
