The recent Cannes award winning film The Assassin features a complex and interesting female as the main character. The genre it comes from does have a tradition of female heroes such as those classic King Hu films like Come Drink With Me.

Was the new Star Wars another abortion? I need to know so that I can determine whether to deprive Disney of my money and pirate it.

    lol, nice meme

The truth is women leads in action films tend to be more boring. Either because they're written in as special snowflakes who can do no wrong (immediately inherent force power mastery, or denigrating on the homer simpson males around them) or they're breaking the 4th wall in other regards.

I was ok with this retcon actually, because Takei became such an outspoken and flaming faggot. If he wasn't I would be totally against this sort of marxism in my sci-fi.

It adds another dimension in the sense we can imagine how many schoolboys he molested over his tenure.

Thank you for your political incorrectness. My faith in human beings NOT being a bunch of pussies or corporate sell-outs, kowtowing to the every whim of the Red Chinese government, has been restored.

We should have sunk the Chinese ship that stole our sea drone. As I've said before, what exactly is Red China going to do? Tell us they are so mad that they will refuse to make more knick-knacks for us?

I wish we could more like India, where their politicians understand the evil long term machinations of the Red China and are immune to their mind tricks.

How can we condemn Putin when there is the Tibet and Taiwan situation? Long live freedom. f**k the Empire. f**k Red China.

Every single minority character in "Grey's Anatomy" is the same. It's like they wrote the series for only white people and then just filled it in with minority characters until some sort of racial quota was filled.

Another film that really bothers me is "Better Luck Tomorrow", which is weird because it has a primarily Asian cast and supposedly based on a true story. Although I'm pretty sure the director was making a statement about Hollywood and decided to 'asian wash' the cast. However if you watch the film you'll notice that you can pretty easily swap them out for anyone else and not change a single line of dialog.

Shows that do it right are "Fresh off The Boat" or "Master of None".

Why must woman NEED to have an explanation to be a lead? Why don't we hold white dude film #9678589687 to those same standards? The need for better writing overall is something to consider. It could be seen as a lack of character development and I would partially agree. But the fact remains that we don't demand the same explanations if the lead is a man.

If the female lead role could be easily swapped with a man, so what? The reverse can be said of many great films. Sometimes gender just doesn't play a role. Not everyone is as good a writer as George Miller.

Well written female characters using girl power is fine, but I think that is over generalizing for every female character. Not all girls grew up playing with barbies and watching my little pony. Some grew up with ninja turtles and played street fighter. I thought Rey in last years Star Wars was great. The movie was just decent but I liked the lead. Could she be replaced with a boy? Sure, but I find the reasoning against her character being a girl as somewhat weak. I work in IT, believe me, techie-geek is not exclusive to men.

A good amount of this can be boiled down to poorly written character development. I don't think female and minority leads should be held up as the example though, when we have had generations to make this an issue already.

Good point, now we should all watch Power Rangers where girls and boys are the lead without any motivation other than "chosen", "lucky" or "kill monsters" and be happy with what we have.

The reason to oppose such careless swapping is because hollywood does the reverse constantly. Always white-washing roles and giving the excuse that "oh we just cast the best person for the role". If you start to argue the other way then it becomes hard to justify why you are against another white male in some role.

That being said, I don't think Marvey or anyone else is arguing against the casting but bad writing.

I see the point about hustling with a combat rifle, and I agree the avenue of debating physical differences is beside the point.

The point I was trying to make was that in modern action and sci-fi, I have already suspended disbelief for a hundred other reasons to allow me not to be disappointed when a woman is physically strong or physically capable.

Most modern action films in no way resemble modern combat. Very few films keep track of bullet count, clip size, or the profound effects of blood loss / being shot when it comes to the hero of the film. The few times I've seen a woman lead I wasn't suddenly lost in a sea of confusion.

As for sci-fi, Leeloo Dallas is a great example. She was an immortal being that had been in stasis for thousands of years, I wasn't shocked that she was a crazy badass. I agree that she probably could have been played by a male actor equally well (talk about subversion, having Bruce Willis' character become attracted to a male immortal crazy badass), but Mila J played the part really well so I didn't care.

Bad writing or bad acting is one thing, but most of the time I'm not put off by casting not a white man as the lead. I simply don't care unless the movie is otherwise shitty.
