    58x r2 seems much closer to 580.

Would they be good for classical music? I liked HD650 for almost all types music except classical, and also some rock songs. I found the the piano notes a bit thick on the 650s and Radiohead's subtlety lost in the treble region. Thoughts?

If you're wanting to stay in the Senn family, the you'd do better with the hd600 or hd660. But nothing will compare to the hd800 for classical music. The experience with the hd800 and classical nears orgasmic.

The fact that these are apparently less resolving than the HD650s are a shame since the more polite treble looks amazing. Wonder how much of the FR is attributable to the enclosure? Will swapping HD650 drivers in help any?

... @Elnrik was right. I'm not even sure if I'm getting these over HD650s and I'm already thinking of modding, haha.

Also, @Ice-man knows what he's talking about. HD800 with classical is transcendental.

They might. Despite frequency response plots in the bass being similar between HD650 and HD58X, the HD58X does sound less thick and muddy. This could be due to the lower third order distortion in the midbass or snappier transients. As others have mentioned, the HD600 could also be another choice, albeit with more brightness in upper mids and mid-treble. The HD58X are slightly less resolving, captures less nuances, than the HD650 / HD6XX and HD600; but unless you've picked the right upstream gear, this won't be noticed much or at all.

Any chance we could get a deeper look at CSDs, like down 45dB or so? The HD650 and 660S looked similar at -35dB for me, but it was apparently the 660S had more ringing when looking at -45dB. Curious if the HD58X exhibits the same trait.

Frequency response aside, the HD660S did not sound as clean to me as the HD650.

Are these comparisons with HD600/650/6XX done with the usual suspect mods (e.g. coin, foam, Dynamat, KISS, etc.)? Or are these impressions of a stock unmodded unit?

I also noticed that the HD58X, like the HD660S, is 150 ohms. Unless I'm mistaken, the usual mods cannot be applied to HD660S because of its different driver structure. What can be said about the HD58X? I could not find a photo of how its inside look like with the grill removed.

I personally prefer a modded HD650/6XX to a stock one by a significant margin. On the other hand, the HD600 seems to benefit less from mods. I wonder how is the modding potential of the HD58X, assuming that the usual mods are applicable.

is it safe to assume here that the HD650 mk2 (silver driver I believe and with new design pads) will measure identical to the HD6XX?

It is amazing at first glance that Sennheiser is giving us this headphone, it appears to have the treble of the 660S and the bass of the HD650. 'solderdude' has been saying that his 58X modded has been getting the most attention from his ears. I believe his modded version draws a nice balance between the possibly overly warm nature of the 650/58X and the sharper nature of the 660S. Anyone else care to weigh in on this?

The latest HD650 measure identically to the HD6XX. I still prefer the HD650 / HD6XX KISS modded. But if one does want want to mod, then perhaps HD58X or HD600 depending upon gear synergies.

Based on the measurements posted (and Marv's impressions), 58x-2 can be a much safer recommendation to non-audiophiles seeking for good headphones. I have some IRL friends who love to listen to recorded musics, but generally hate spending ridiculous money (>$50) in non-transducers (cdp or dac or amp).

I am also considering to buy one for my mother.

Prior to this, I would have recommended HD558 / HD 598. This is so much better for just a little bit more. The problem might be spotty availability given Massdrop's sales model.

These look so nice but do I really need three variations of basically the same headphone?

Agreed, anyone have thoughts on whether the treble or midrange on the 58X differs much from the 650?

I'll pick one up on the used market. Seems like a great budget recommendation.
