Actuation force on the Browns isn't low enough to accidentally type a letter.

I used to accidentally type letters with Blue all the time, then overcompensated with Black, then tried Red (both of the previous were bad for typing), then Green and Clear (both good for typing not gaming), then finally Brown. Wish I'd tried Brown sooner.

Every time I look at this I wonder... and then decide to stick with my old Compaq PC keyboard.

How old? I don't know, but it has no Windows key. When did they get introduced? 98? 2K?

Anyway, I don't know what technology the switches are, but it has a pretty firm touch, longish travel, and (as my wife comments, but I only really notice after having my ears cleaned, it makes a hell of a noise. Maybe I'm just heavy handed.

The keyboard has been stowed away a few times, but always comes out again when the new whatever fails. It has even had stuff stored on top of it, and it still works. I have absolutely no idea what computer it came with: that is long, long gone and forgotten.

I'm borrowing a Steelseries from my buddy, it has red switches on it. Coming from a membrane keyboard it took some adjustment, but the quick action and light keys make them fun for gaming. My reaction times in LoL went way up in comparison. I'm going to look into buying a Duckie Shine with Reds in the future.

Reds are awesome for fast-paced gaming. For a while, I switched between Blues for typing and Reds for gaming, but I got tired of swapping keyboards when my kid kept taking one of them to random locations in the house and found the Browns to be a great compromise.

You should try the switches whenever possible, I personally much prefer blue switch, but it is a switch difficult to do right.

That would spoil it. It is decades of cat hair and bacteria that provide the cushioning!

I have a WASD with browns and o-rings at work, a Das 4 with browns that I don't really use because it takes up so much more space, and a Corsair K70 with reds at home. For some reason my accuracy is complete crap when typing on the K70. Almost feels like it's not full size.

Microsoft Comfort Curve Keyboard 3000 owner reporting. I should have bought a second one because it is quite good. Responsive, enough travel and not too clacky if you know what I mean.

Old school IBM/Lenovo keyboards for the win. I stick to the old school keyboards.

I have never owned a Mechanical keyboard, just a regular gaming keyboard. What is the difference between Brown Switches and Cherry Switches?

Browns are a type of Cherry MX switches, which are a brand of mechanical keyboard switches. They have a sort of bump near the bottom when you press down, but aren't "clicky" like the Blues. They're probably the best compromise between Blue/Brown/Reds.

Reds are a linear switch, so there is no bump when you press down. Probably feels similar to your normal membrane keyboard. Horrendous for typing (you'll see a huge increase in typos!), but good for gaming where you may have to spam certain keys.

Green/White/Blacks are heavier versions of Blue/Brown/Reds (require more force). I don't like them very much since I'm not a heavy handed typer anymore. Pretty uncommon switches outside of spacebars.

thank you for the info, I appreciate that! I think I would prefer the Brown Switched, I like the keyboard Luckbad posted a link to that has the Brown Switches.

Be careful with gaming keyboards. They sometimes skimp quality for features.

Browns are definitely a good choice if noise akin to a typewriter is not appropriate for your environment.

Das and Filco are both excellent brands. My Filco Majestouch Red Tenkeyless has lasted me like 8 years without any issues at all!

I tried most of the cherry switches myself and like blue the most. It just feels good to get that clicky feedback when typing :). I'm using the Filco Ninja Majestouch-2, build quality is pretty good.

I'm using Cherry MX reds on a Coolermaster CM Storm Trigger with Das keyboard o-rings which makes it even quieter and dampens bottoming out the keys. Unfortunately with the reds I get frequent typing dyslexia, which lowers my typing speed, but its pretty good once you learn not too bottom them out incessantly.

I tried browns as well, but the actuation force is too low to avoid accidental errors as per reds and the trigger point is more an annoyance than being really useful, I can't see why one would prefer them above the blues? I'd like to try blues but worried my wife will throw me out of the house. Black switches are also nice, but I get finger joint fatigue with those. Would like to try some high quality topre or buckling switches in the future. I'd also prefer tenkeyless which would be ergonomically preferable. As it stands I have to offset the keyboard a bit to work comfortable with my mouse.

Yeah the bottom out feeling is the reason I don't quite like black and red, you can put o-ring on though. Brown feels too "dull" for me.

Code TKL with clears feels pretty good to me.

I have a Steelseries 6Gv2 with reds/rings I don't use anymore. Free to a pyrate friend in need. Drop me a PM if interested.

If I used blues I'd probably get fired.
